| Some of my mates are away at the minute ,,,, but we have been doing a ' round the houses ' e:mail so everyone can put together whats it's like in the industry. it will take a bit of time , but will be worth it . The one of the Mods here can stick it as a first post. Quote:

Pay = Shite....... as a baby diver, your looking at £ 45 - 50 a 12 hour day. Then it will rise to around £ 90 if ya lucky. Costs upwards of £ 5.000 For the first few years after you are ticketed, ypu have to take whatever jobs you can get on, pump out loads of CV's and get your name spread about. Then it's sat on ya butt for days on end waiting for the phone to ring. Quote:
Now do callouts doing rope off prop jobs, bits and pieces in salvage, odd NDT'ing........... do i enjoy it ? ermmm i did do. My advice ,,,,, get a RoV pilots tickets..... why ? in 10 years time there will be about 100 divers ,,, the RoV is taking dive work off us ,,, You can't bend a RoV. RoV's don't have 3 hour T breaks. RoV's can stay down a lot longer. They don't argue back. the list is long.

| work Hi, I guess it depends were you want to be a "pro" in recreational diving. Here in the Netherlands a DiveMaster cann't make a living. why? People will pay for a guided tour when there on holiday. In there own backyard they know the way... so get more tourist divers to dive in your area and become a pro-guide... See the problem is if a new divers askes me to guide him around and I would ask money for it... there 10 divers at the waterside willing to take them allong for free... It doesn't work that way if I am on holiday... nobody takes me along for a guide dive for free... at least not in resorts etc.. Any resorts in the UK? No, thought so, same here... So find a place nice and warm, there is a new diveresort opening in Sudan (looking for a couple Instructor and DM, mind you more work then diving allone, administration, ordering supplies, so after 2-3 dives you have an other workday ahead and (!) guest that want eveing entertainment... more diving... Just like other jobs it;s hard work and you need to be able to do more then diving, make clients feel they made a friend and want to come back, stear a boat, work a compressor, keep the stocks, make sure all invoices are paid for.... just keep trying, there are a few website that lists many jobs. You woun't get rich but have a hell of a time (and somethinh to talk about to your grandchildren)

| For what it's worth, I work in the Oil & Gas Industry so have seen quite a few CD's in my time. Nothing against Andy, but the one's I've seen (Who've been doing it a while) are a f**kin mess. Fingers missing, eyes missing, bad limps etc the money might be good while it lasts, but at what cost? As Andy says, get a ROV liscence, experience, spread your name about and continue diving recreationally/technically at home

| Thanks for all the responces. It seems has definatly provided some clarity on the situation. I had the very general idea that although it costs a shed load to train, you can earn silly money but the physical costs seem to be high. Look forward to that post, Andy thanks. |

Do yourself a favour, dont start, and save your money. If you want the insight on commercial diving go to www. longstreath.com and see for your self. Use the bulletin board. It will give you a pretty clear picture of the state of commercial diving today. |
