ROV Ticket and HSE Surface supplied courses

Evening all

I have had a long chat with my wife and parents and things are not looking too peachy about me walking straight into a job that i could stick with for a number of years.

It came up that my family are willing to stump up the cash for the HSE Scuba, 1st aid and surface supplied courses in Fort William. They were saying that another 10 weeks of not earning wont matter now that you have been in education so long.

Can I ask advice please - i know i love diing and a commie ticket would be good, but what are the prospects of getting work?

Moving on to the ROV ticket, how much, how long, how many tickets needed?

I would like the surface supplied but if it wont warrant the costs of 5k then i shall have second thoughs

Cheers

Keith

I too am in the middle of re-thinking about what to do. I have to say I have not seen a lot of potential work for commercial divers. The "glory days" of oil exploration have gone. No idea about ROV - hopefully some more experienced people will post on that.

I'm researching web-based stuff at the minute. Do you think you could offer web based training? Its a big growth area. I don't know your background (but I do use your gas blender program!!) I'm sure you could find a market.

Just a thought.

PS. PM me if you have a brilliant idea - I'm all ears (seeing the doc about it next week)

Chris

Keith.

Cheers fro the PM , but as you have stuck the same sort of questions here, i'll try my best without disheartening you, and like so many that have asked me the same questions.
Perhaps here will benefit all.

I will answer from my experience and what i hear from divers that i have spoken to, during the last year from getting ticketed.

My opinions are mine, and some of others that have been in the trade for 30 years that i work alongside nearly every day of the week, some i have tried so hard to become members of YD, so they can pass over thier experience and tails, but some read from guest members and basically say " nah, it's full of wannabe know it all's, colledge boys " ,,, this is not the way i look at it.

I would personally get a job , where you can earn a bit of cash and get in some fun dives , without having a family debt. ( these can cause rows ).
It's ok going away for a 10 week course, but you will be in the same situ as now...... Not earning and looking for work.
There is no job you can walk into after a course.

A lot of wannabes do the course and think that there is lots of work out there, maybe and i mean a BIG MAYBE, that you may get some work on some grotty pipeline in shallow water off India or Africa earning £ 20 dollars a day with a bowl of sticky rice thrown in, and ya be treated like one of thier own. The drawbacks are that these companies do not apply HSE standards and ya be lucky if the company is insured. Not really the sort of charming dive job , when you have a wife to leave back in the UK and $ 140 doesn't help to pay back the family debt.

Companies still like you to have a few years under ya belt as a part one diver first.

Cheers Andy

I had a long meeting with my thesis tutor (a diving systems surveryor from Det norske Veritas) The answer was the same. I have an interview at english nature a week tomorrow. Im bricking it already but he said that go for that as commercial diving is now getting as rare as rocking horse shite.

Can see his point - and the interview im going for is a marine conservation officer (with emphasis on power cables and pipeline routes)

Thanks

Keith

Keith

...my limited experience of going for "public sector" jobs is that they are more or less obliged to ask the stock questions such as

"what are your good/bad points"

bla bla

good luck!

Keith ...There is a world wide shortage of Rov pilot techs ... my advice is work for a little while get some coin together and do the Fort william course ... I believe they recommend doing the electronics course first if you dont have a relevant electronics background/trade ...

Ps theres loads of work in asia and australia ... I just wish there was loads of sat work ... ?

Hello Keith,

I know someone who has just completed their ROV Tech course in Australia (in the last couple of weeks) and within one week he was recruited to join offshore operations in Asia. As Fester posted, there is a global shortage of ROV pilots so this would be the best route to take.
