190m? uh oh. too deep for an escape out the hatches I would have thought. Looks like a small sub and the american rescue sub may not be able to latch onto the hatch.

I guess they will need to drag it up somehow to the surface.

perhaps someone else who was at the SETT trip can confirm this ... I thought the deepest escape test was 200 m?

Yep it's on the wall just outside the class room and I'm sure it was 200M

Russian Sub Stuck

Just perusing BBC News and saw this;

The Russian navy has launched an operation to rescue the crew of a deep-sea diving vessel trapped on the ocean floor in the Russian Far East. The Priz submersible became entangled in a fishing net at a depth of 190m (620ft) off the Kamchatka peninsula on Thursday, officials say.

The navy says 10 ships have been sent to the area, and the help of the US Pacific fleet has been requested.

It adds that the seven men on board have enough air for several more days.

The submersible, normally used for underwater rescue operations, was taking part in a military exercise when it sank.

Too deep

"The Navy's Command has requested the US Pacific Fleet for assistance through the embassy in Moscow," Russian Navy commander-in-chief Igor Dygalo told Itar-Tass news agency.

He gave no details on what kind of help the US could provide.

Navy officials said there was "technical communication" with the sailors, but no voice contact. None are believed to be hurt.

The vessel is too deep to allow the sailors to swim to the surface on their own.

The accident occurred almost exactly five years after the nuclear submarine Kursk sank to the bottom of the Barents Sea after explosions on board.

All 118 men on board died - including some sailors who survived the initial blast but ran out of oxygen.

Russian authorities were sharply criticised for their handling of the crisis.

When I was shopping for my IDA64 Russian Oxygen rebreather the supplier asked me if I was interested in a 300m trimix escape set.

It had a drogue that deployed at about 100m to slow you down so you didn't shoot clean out of the water.

If it had been dirt cheap I might have said yes just to look at it but it was several hundred euros and 1970s stock.

Hmm - they've got at least a couple of days before they are in significant peril, so it's either sit tight or hop into 190m of water with a bag on your head. I think 'sit tight' wins hands down for a few more days yet.

I know the conditions might be greatly different and there is the logisitcal element to the problem, but I've been reading the 300+ mts OC dives in the magazines this month.

Is it not beyond the realms of possibility to get someone there by plane and get a hawser attached or even some form of umbilical connected up by human means ? Getting a DSRV there (without the availability of Thunberbird 2) might take a little more time.
