| I looked into this as a career when I was between school and uni. But being an underwater labourer just didn't appeal. I'd rather keep diving for pleasure rather than for a job. And I earn more too doing what I do.

However, the chance of a little part time very light work has popped up so may be worth investigating. To be fair though, its really one of those jobs (laying/maintaining shallow moorings and stuff) that doesnt so much require high grade working diver quals as it does a tick in a couple of boxes for the HSE guys. As far as i understand it that is. I could be wrong.... |

| Will YOU honestly employ a baby AIR diver at the age of 35+ (If you encourage people to take the commercial route inform them correctly) In the real world we have client approval? Maybe out there you don't? Rather than encourage people to take the plunge we should educate them as to the pitfalls of their career move? (They may regret it if they don't get the Bosse's number. Whats the point of the personnel dept?) You have already said You decide whos on your job! So your'e the hirer and firer? Are you an Offshore manager/Diving Superintendant? I won't be bated into a slagging match! Just keep the information full and correct. The commercial diving industry has shrunk dramatically over the last ten years or so and any posts or advice will be scruitinised by ALL! Do you give rewarding career advice to the three times divorced, alchoholic, tax dodgers? Sorry I've rambled on a bit, but potential commercial divers need to be told the true facts! |

| For Posiedons sake TUP... read what I've said in the posts - yes I am a superintendent and the diving game did shrink AND I put people off joining the ranks of us 'commie' for years, BUT after hurricane Kat (stop me if I've said all this several times over) the business is now booming AND 36 year old 'baby' divers are getting work. With oil at the price it is this boom is set to last a while.... I'm getting tired of this thread. I fully realise that this will be scrutinised by all - do you think that worries someone like me in the position of knowing this business inside-out? TUP, you say potential divers need the true facts and people need advising against the pitfalls of a career change, I'm all for that - do you have those facts and advice for them? |
