| The advice I have had before is just do the minimum: HSE Part 4(Scuba) and Part 3 (Surface Supply), then most of the training will come from on the job. Why not email some companies and ask them?? Dan |

I have advised people to take the cheapest route to full HSE 'offshore' air diver - what Dangerous Dan has stated - Pt 3 - will NOT get you offshore - you will be a course short and destined to work in civil engineering only. You need Pt 1 and Offshore Sea-Survival and HUET (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training). There is no shortage of advice on this site about 'commie' diving but most of it isn't worth the price of the electricity used, however the above comes to you from a working OCM (Offshore Construction Manager) who is onboard a diving vessel at this very moment - your call. Good luck with whatever you do.

| 1. I'm not sure if he wants to go offshore? 2. I thought it was rare if not impossible to get offshore work without civils experience? Cheers, PS. This is only what I have heard, I don't actually have experience in the sector but I am Part 4 and have looked at training to a higher level Dan Last edited by Dangerous Dan : 14-01-07 at 11:38 PM. |

| D Dan, take a look at the post about 'Skills shortages' and you'll see what I have been trying to do since joining this community 9 months back - namely; "To help young guys get into an industry that has (as you rightly stated) been traditionally mega-hard to break-in to." And although I took heaps of flack and was called a liar and charged with pocketing cash (I don't know how that was supposed to work) at the expense of others, you will see from the article in Offshore Shipping Online that I was ahead of the game way back last summer. Though I can hardly call myself a prophet as we in this business have seen this manpower shortage coming for a couple of years - we just didn't bank on hurricane Katrina wiping-out most of the Gulf of Mexico!

| As a matter of interest (I am too old to consider a change of lifestyle) what does a pt4 enable you to do? |
| ||||
| Unless the goverment have changed it all again the order is; Pt 4 - commercial scuba - fish-farming, m/biology, cameraman, kitten drowner etc. Pt 3 - inland/inshore (harbours etc) surface supplied air diving, using various helmets, power tools and vibrators Pt 2 - we'll come back to this - it's a government thing! Pt 1 - full 'offshore' air diver using wet-bells and all tools etc and holding a 008 cert (licenced to get rat-arsed in Dubai) Pt 2 - back again... saturation diver - the real deal - able to self-induce a coma at great depth , cannot be woken without cattle prod!
