When I did my courses at Fort William (2003), the first week of commercial scuba they took students with no diving qualification for a week's training to give them the most basic PADI qualification. I received discount for that week as already had BSAC qualification.

Having studied the four HSE standards I'd say they equate to below;

Part IV - Commie Scuba - Allows you to pee in the London Aquarium while preventing a TV personality with far too much make-up from drowning in a Lamma 'bubble' helmet.

Part III - Surface supplied - Freedom to work country-wide, drink 18 pints of Guiness per night and have relations with guesthouse landladies with far too much make-up.

Part I - Offshore air diver - Liscenced to get drunk enough to miss your flight to Singapore, get punched-out by Aberdonian doormen and have relations with office staff with far too much make-up.

Part II - Sat diver - Liscenced to refuse to talk with lower HSE grades, abuse life support personnel, sleep until 15 minutes before called to dive and have relations with anyone wearing far too much make-up.

Another HSE Diving related question:

If someone has the HSE Schedule 4 (Scientific and Archeological Diving) cert, would they also need to get the HSE Schedule 5 (Media Diver) cert to do any TV work?

(Daughter, although still at school, wants to become a Marine Biologist, and then to do some TV presenting...)

Thanks

Andrew

I think that 4 supercedes 5 as 3 does to 4 and 1 does to 3 etc. By the time your lass is ready for it all the whole deal may have changed, but if she were starting off right now I'd advise doing a Part 3 as this would cover her for surface supplied work which may well pop-up on occassion. The higher you can afford to go the better - more options open to you etc - but Part 3 should be more than enough for biologists and TV folk.

She has seen the details one of the Uni courses (Plymouth) and the course includes Schedule 4 as an option module within the course... but, as you say, by the time she gets to go to Uni, things may well have changed!

Many thanks.
