New Brish Diving Helmet IrDA-C

New British diving Helmet using the Linux based IrDA-C master controller. This model summarizes some ideas and thoughts that were exchanged on the IrDA. It is not medically certified and whoever has better evidence or some more source of information is encouraged to contribute.
The IrDA spec says that the range of IrDA devices has been limited to 1m for reasons of eye safety. Another plausible assumption is that power consumption and IR pollution/crosstalk were reasons for this limitation. In principle there could be a danger, because infrared light is not registered by the eye, and thus the pupil won't close in order to protect the retina from bright IR light sources. This is the same situation as with UV light, which will cause snow blindness eventually, but in contrast to UV light, IR light contains much less harmful energy due to its longer wavelength.
The only legal restrictions and medical advices we were able to find on the web were concerned with infrared emissions of heat lamps or in the welding process and IEC 825-1 (CENELEC EN60825-1). But there is nothing for underwater welding. This suggests that IR light as emitted by IrDA devices will be harmless, since even the peak power emitted by strong IR LEDs (ca. 300mW) is several orders of magnitude below the power emitted by medical IR heat lamps (up to 500W). For these, however, you are supposed to wear protective goggles, so maybe if you are looking straight into 1.000 infrared LEDs flashing at once, you should do so, too. The effect of infrared light is mostly heat, though, and not an alteration or destruction of the biological cell structure, such as caused by UV light. The head up display will show all surface supplied info as well as the visual perameter of underwater objects in dark black water or when a military operation precludes the use of visual light.
As stated above, this discussion is only based on guesswork and common sense assumptions about the data found in IR LED and specs. If anybody with a better commercial diving or medical knowledge can comment on this, please do so!!!

I was about to comment, then A. Berk (who is sat behind me) added that it looks as if someone is trying to "reinvent a 'better' wheel" and I tend to agree. Just by looking at one photo of the helmet I can tell you that it won't beat anything KM put out and a heads-up display really isn't an important requirement for a commie as we have numerous other gizmos that do what you are after.

However, that is only the way Berko and me see it so I hope you find a market.

Hang on, if you can log on, and Berko is sat behind you, tell him to get his sad ass back on YD!

I'll be first in the queue if said HUD supplies me with the following info:

1. What time the local pubs open
2. A GPS system to direct me to a kebab shop for post dive chow
3. A real time estimation of hours left underwater until I can afford a sat course
4. A live video feed to Kirsty Allsop's boudoir

More seriously, there are lots of sticky-out-bits on that hat for me to catch on things. Also, the problems we often have with the very simple electronics in a KM lid when they get damp are bothersome enough. How'd you propose to keep your more advanced gubbins working?

Gentlemen.
No prizes for you then, lol. Besides the helmet was built as a prototype for a navy project before KMorgan, when US Divers owed all the tooling and the moulding for the KMB-10 band mask and the USD Comm Hat 1 although KM bought the tooling back some years later. However both were well before the beloved S17. About 20 year old now. As for beating anything KM put out? we always did. Lol Enjoy your trip. Next year I will make it easier on you both, Thought why you didnt grab the bait, blinded by progress I guess?. Iain

"Aha, gud wan..." as Insp Clueseau would say. I'm all for a good wind-up however although you caught us... this one was a little too 'pointless' to raise more than an off-handed remark. Next year eh?
