From talking to people who looked into this, get fit. Then get more fit. Then keep getting fitter. And then get fitter than that.

The diving stuff seems like a piece of piss compared to the fitness stuff.

The training won't have changed hugely over a few years, it will be the same fitness, the same beasting, and the same 100 candidates to get two or three good divers I expect. Just make sure you're better than 97 others and I suppose you're fine.

I would get hold of Tony, he has probably got some mates who are still kicking around who can advise, even if he can't.

    Digs.

All the CD & SF dive kit until 2005, just the exciting stuff though, someone else did knives/torches/wetsuits/compressors etc. It was me that named the replacement CDLSE. CDBA still sends shivers down my spine.

    Chucker,

I don't know how much it's changed over the years but if it's anything like it was in 98/99 then don't worry about the diving as it's nothing to do with how good a diver you are.

You will need to be comfortable in the water but with 4+ dives every day then it just becomes second nature.

The main thing to worry about is as stated above..... GET REALLY FIT.
Have you seen GI Jane???????????? They certainly used to make trainees do mud runs, do team runs carrying geminis above their heads with instrcutors in them, carry 'girlfriends' (telegraph poles or gerry cans full of water) wherever they go.
My advice is batter the running, batter the running whilst carrying a load, batter the chin ups and batter the dips!
If you nail the fitness then the rest will just fall into place for you.

Best of luck and merry Christmas.

    Nik

Oh and one more thing - get in the water and start doing surface swims with a pair of solid fins (something like jetfins) until you've got a set of thighs you could bend steel on.

Dont worry Craig...the thought of the ridicule from the club and me threatening to tear you limb from limb should you slack off and fail be all the incentive you need to get you thru this no sweat!!!!

That's where you can get caught out, I've seen lads who had muscles in their sh1t give up in the first couple of days. Yes, fitness will help and the fitter you get the more it will help but its 'mental attitude' that will get you through. It don't matter how fit you are you'll be just as cold, just as wet, just as tired, just as intimidated and just as prone to fcuk-up as everyone else. You just need to take each day as it comes, keep a sense of humour, keep telling yourself that loads of guys have done it so why not you. Start toughening up with some cold water swims, yeah just like those old tw@ts do in the Serpentine.

Top tip; Keep your mouth shut at the right times - which is most of the time - you can be as cocky as you like once you have the badge on your arm.
