The port used to be called the Fischer connector. Maybe they are now selling enough VR3s that it is cheaper to fit the Fischer connector to all the units. The IR link has been a cause of annoyance for many people and there was a rumour that a wired comms link would be developed.

The unit can occassionaly play up as described, often immediately after a battery change. Removing the battery for 15 minutes will completely reset the unit and clear most of the strange behaviour problems - you will lose the settings and dive history.

I have been diving a VR3 since the first 'brick' model came out. The original model was a little flaky. The reliability has constantly been improved and I have not had a problem in the last 3 years or so. The Windows reference is a little unfair. My DTV box is far less reliable than my VR3 and that is Linux based.

Before giving up you could try taking it along with whatever you were using previously and see how the VR3 performs alongside.

The options menu at times was not all there, unless there is an option for switching it off that I can't find then this should not have happened.
The screen was jumping around on its own without pushing anything and the unit would not switch on properly. When you pushed the left button it brought up the info screen but when pushed again it would not start up
onto the dive screen.
Delta P called it the I/O port to me as it is not just for O2 sensors, the one behind the scren is an IR port.
What worries me is that it was doing strange things yesterday but it behaving itself like there was never anything wrong, reminds me of Windows on a PC and I wouldn't trust that to dive on.
I am going to call Delta P on Monday and see what they say but I am not happy diving this unit
Sod that, send it back and have it checked out before you dive it. Its a great bit of kit but like any bit of kit it can be faulty or have problems. get it fixed and then use it you wont regret it.

Now that it works fine I have programmed it and played around with it. It does seem to do all I wanted and more. Certainly useful for the sort of diving I do and far more flexible than tables.
I am just worried about its flakyness when I got it out the box, changing the battery made it worse and then the next day and since despite trying it every now and again it seems fine.
For something I am wanting to take to 60+m and rely on I am still wary so will see what Delta P say tomorrow.

Sorry Dave, I forgot to add the emoticon. If i had you may have noticed that I was just having a laugh....

Hope you didn't take offence.

There is actually a protocol to follow to change the battery which can make it do strange things if not followed.
