| Apeks Quantum. Harrumph. OK after praising the Apeks Quantum it has now somewhat dropped in my estimation after it having a sulky fit in Stoney on Saturday. Pressy pressy press: mix 1 set to good ol' nitrox 21, mix 2 set to fiddy cent. So I jump in, do a quick buoyancy check at 4m with my trainee (semi-dry clad chap very impressed at 5°C) then back up for a surface swim out to the Stanegarth buoy for his simulated deco dive. On the way over I notice that the Apeks has now rather un-usefully set itself into gauge mode. Great. Luckily the Suunto Vyper sat next to it is quite happy so away we go. Then on the way back up, there I was doing the simulated deco stop at 6m when I take a glance at the Quantum which now appears to think that I am on the surface at an indicated 0.0m. I'll be contacting Apeks in the morning for a good old moan and will keep you updated. Pants.

| Hum. All brands of computers seem to have their problems. A fella in our club had to send two Suunto Stingers back. The first after his son threw up on it (well if it was waterproof it should be vomit proof) and the second after he bent it when he surfaced with 83m of stops showing. He was diving under Swanage pier at the time. Suunto were fantastic about replacing them though, but it just goes to show: Never rely on a computer. Laters, Janos

The Quantum looks like a nice computer especially for the price, and was working its way onto my shopping list, but we've been hearing about a few too many problems for my liking.

| First vytec I had a similar issue with my first Vytec a couple of years ago. Computer thought I was at 10m when I was at 6. At the surface it was convinced I was at 6. LDS swopped the computer without any fuss and no trouble since |

| It happens to Vypers too. mate of mine was doing his nitrox course at the time went to the agreed max depth and had his instuctor throwing a paddie dragging him back up the slope. Compared his computer to the guages in his console and was a good 5m deeper than he thought he was. (well within his ppO2 but thats not really the point) back on the surface he was still at 5m. As far as i am aware its gone back and been sorted. but it really does point out you should have a backup and check it! |
