| I use an outdoor compass too. Mine was about £9 for an oil filled one, I think it is the basic Silva model but would have to check that.

I always thought a needle would try to be aligned with the magnetic field around it. Thus it would be roughly parallel to the earth's surface for the elevations we use them at.

Any idea where we can get one from? And which one do you use? Many thanks, Ian

I got mine from Snow and Rock, but I've seen them in places like Millets, any outdor shop really. Mine is really just a plain one, with a luminous needle and a rotating bezel. It does not have the flip-up bits as you don't need to be that accurate underwater. It's like the first on this page : http://www.suuntousa.com/products_comp.htm. hth Paul

| Cheers Paul, I'd never have thought about that but I can see where you're coming from. Think I will get myself one and give it a go. All the best, Ian

| Good spec compasses have a slight weight to accommodate them to the local dip angle (in the UK a free compass needle would point down a bit for north and in NZ up) but it is only a slight adjustment so that they work on a flat surface. Since divers tip their compass until they rotate it doesn't make any difference to us so use one optimised for the upper Himalayas and it will still work fine. I like strap on ones. It shares a wrist with the computer. The computer is on the palm side and the compass on the other side. |

| Avoid the really cheap ones as they don't work that well. Silva, Suunto or Recta are reliable names to look for. You can check by the sound of tapping it if it is oil-filled or not. I use a Silva.

| 'Er indoors has just said that her compass works prefectly well in any part of the world, she has never failed to scribe a perfect circle, d'oh. Excuse me while I fetch her hat and coat.
