| Phew.....that takes the pressure off buying a computer for the minute then. It'd be good to get hands on some on the course and see how they go. Cheers for that, Mark. Getting excited/nervous about this course more and more as the days go by... So we can think about bulk buys, but not as urgently as I thought, Simon. I guess Mark will want an input too... Lou |

As for kit, yup big up to Mark for offering to let us try out some of the computers and as you say Lou, takes a bit of pressure off us for now. I'll mention all this to Mark when I see him tonight. Simon |

| OK I have had three Quantums. The last (the 2nd free replacement) I put back on ebay (and got more than I paid for the original!!). You will gather I don't exactly recommend them. For cash reasons I bought a Vyper - one gas. I have thought about this a lot and have recently done the Adv EAN. So - here's some input that might help you. At 50M in the dark you want BIG - a wristwatch type puter is crap - just don't. Below 40M you really need some Helium so the VR3 is the baby to buy. (No I can't afford it either). If this is your ultimate goal (trimix that is) why waste cash on an expensive 2 gas computer that will end up as a timer? If you have a nitrox 'puter now stick with it. Do the course. Use EAN50 from 18-20M up but go with the back gas deco - it will only be a minute or two at difference much of the time. You should plan deeper dives and follow the plan. This means cutting tables with deco software. The cheap 'puter now is OK 'cos its in Guage Mode. Trying to get more BT using the multi-level aspect of a computer is not such good planning and not helpful if in the longer term you want to go more down the trimix route. So - while a Vytec is nice (and if I had the money...) it is far from needed. Maybe the Quantum will work someday... I found the runtime figures too small to read at 40M+ The strap's too short as well...... Chris

| Just buy a Vytec. These are good, proven and used by a shed load of divers. The 3 gas switches are easy to do and just what you'll need unless you go to trimix in which case you need to be looking at £700 for a VR3 and a shed load more for courses and gas. I would avoid a normal nitrox computer if you are considering extending your deco times and using a deco gas as they cannot cope with this. If you are only looking at a few minuits it's no big deal, but then why bother taking a stage for this little time? 50% will literaly half the deco time from a deep or long dive. So instead of doing perhaps 35 mins deco on air, you may be out the water in say 20 mins, that's a big difference when hanging on a shot in the blue. James

| That's OK if your SAC lets you stay long enough. For me though I find a trimix with EAN 50 gives no more than about 20 min deco with what back gas is available from my twin 10s. (At 35m+ less than that as you say why take a stage.. agreed) I too like the Vytec and for long hangs with a nitrox/air back gas it makes sense. But just run a trimix through the same profile before you make your mind up! Chris
