| I got a Vyper a bit over 2 years ago, maybe a little more, when I was still fairly new to diving. I'm now at the point where a Vytec would be useful. I do think now that I should have got a Vytec back then for the extra £100. As it is, my little Vyper will have to keep me going for another year or two - i'll just use a second mix for a bit extra safety / feelgood margin for now. Basically, if you can afford it now then a Vytec would probably be a good idea, if not then a Vyper will last a good 2-3 years. In the time i've had mine the only change in Suunto computers has been the new Gekko and D9 (neither of which replace the Vyper/Vytec), and prices for Vyper are only down around £25 compared to the price I paid for mine. | If the Apeks are sorted, for the money well worth it. The gas switching is all you would need and cheaper than a vytec. If you dont EVER intend going nitrox, its the cheaper apeks! When I bought my vyper four years ago,the decision came down to not liking the wet contacts on the Aladin. Next puter I buy will be a bend-o-matic. Probably!

| OK, Since I seem to be doing a re-appearence of sorts. Get the Vytec, I originally got a Vyper, 12 months later got a Vytec. It's a good solid computer, did me proud for quite some time, and even now I still use it as a dive timer and data logger. Yes it has a couple of limitations, and yes it can produce deco schedules that are quite long. But, better too long than too short. On the whole the Vytec is one of those bits of kit you never regret buying, it might drive you nuts on occaision but it is always useful. Take care, Andrew

| If you can afford it and think your diving might progress to using different gases for deco then the vytec is probably a good choice. If you can't see yourself using more than one gas or about wireless integration for a few years then go for the vyper. I decided to pay the extra and go for the vytec. It's great for the diving I'm doing now, but I can also see how it will be useful as I progress and I'm hoping to get a decent amount of usage out of it. |

| For the extra price of the Vytec you could buy the Vyper and a copy of V-Planner/GAP/Whatever. If you are at all keen the time from Adv EAN to Trimix will be short rendering the Vytec useless except as a timer. The PC software will give you the info for EAN accelerated deco and for trimix. Most give lifetime upgrades so its a one-off purchase. That said whichever you buy the Suuntos sell well on ebay so its not like a major disaster. Chris

| You don't need a computer - just follow this simple rule: 1) Dive until you get cold/bored/scared. 2) Come up until it hurts. 3) re-decend until the pain stops. 4) Count to 10 slowly (fingers) or 20 (fingers and toes). 5) Ascend (loop to step 2) works a treat, and if you run out air on the way up take off your drysuit and breath via skin osmosis. <Disclaimer> Diving is a dangerous sport and the science of decompression is not well understood. I accepts no responsibilty for any injury or death incurred by using the above algorithm. </Disclaimer> |

| Or buy a Gekko for about £130, flog it in two years time for about £80 at a guess. Does Nitrox, no download, no gas switching but has Suunto behind it. Just thought I'd throw that in and ruin any final thoughts you might have come to, Matt |
