sod sod buggerit and blast

So I've been sensible since the posiedon debacle, and I've not rushed out and bought Force fins, a halcoyn wing and a suunto D9. I've cut the credit cards up, and I'm thinking, trying things out and asking advice before I make any purchases.

So it seems that the next thing I need is a dive timer (my watch isn't very good for this) and for not much more money I can buy a decent computer. Which is well because diving a computor rather than tables seems to be a way of not pissing of potencial buddies

So I've looked, I've read reviews, and I've talked to others in the club. I've asked about aid integrated, consul mounted vs wrist mounted and I've heard pros and cons either way. Although I'd like a D9 or a Ti Stinger, I don't NEED one.

I decided that it came down to a choice between the Suunto Vyper vs the Vytec, and reasoned that the vyper would meet my needs for a while yet.

THEN I read some of the nitox threads... OK, so I'm NOT going to be doing gas switching this year, or even next, but for the sake of an other hundred quid, it seems the vytec will future proof me for a long time to come. Or am I being unrealistic in the life span of a compter, nad by the time I'm up to gas switching, a 'puter bought now will be worn out in any case. Should I stick with the original plan and get the Vyper, then deal with gas switching computers when I come to that problem?

And no, I'm not awash with money, SWMBO has decreed thatt the loft/shed contents must be used to fund any dive kit purchases this year. Anyone want to buy some fantastic hifi? Cheap!

i dont actually know the answer to this one so will put the question forward.

How much was a vytec 2 years ago? are you going to spend an extra £100 now only to see the price come down by 50-100 quid over the next 2 years before you actually get to use the extra functions?

i would say buy what you need to buy when you need to buy it. ie get the vyper now then flog it and upgrade when you need the vytec.

All in my opinion...

Either Vyper of Vytec will do you for the next year or two no worries.
If you already think you'll be wanting to do accelerated deco diving, then go Vytec, otherwise Vyper is a solid single mix computer.

What a sensible answer. I could do a proper NPV analysis and everything. But I expect that it will come to the same conclusion.

Ta.
Oh, and have a greenun

my 2pence worth ..

go for suunto or uwatec - apeks still don't seem to have got their computers absolutely right yet

how many gasses? well, you'll probably want two in the long run.... three's a bit excessive - vyper does single gas or guage (dive timer and depth guage) - so this will work well enough, until you move on to either accelrated deco or trimix (and you know you WILL want to)

See no help at all

Ok helpful bit

The vytec as I understand has what I see as a flaw.. with a bottom gas and a deco gas... the deco time shown is based on the gas you are using only.. you cannot see your combined gas deco time.. I think

The Apex appears to still have question marks about build quality

The new uwatec tecs don't have the same number of appraisals

So I eventually went for the Uwatec as when/if my diving goes beyond its abilities I will use tables.

So personal preference.

I have ordered it today from my LDS

I guess they all are as safe as can be in diving and each one will have its followers.

Be warned it does become a mine field!!!

Good luck it may drive you barking looney!!!!!!!

Actually, I've just read the title to this thread. It's quite rude isn't it?
