Oceanic Atom

So the search goes on. Stilll minded to get a vyper ot vytec, but on enquiring at one of our lds the owner tried to tempt me with the Oceanic Atom. He's just bought one for his own use, but as he's yet to use it he couldn't tell me much about it.

On paper it seems good, but as I'm not taken with the idea of wireless air integration, the facility to use 3 senders with it is a bit wasted.

The lifetime warentee is also a nice idea, but if it's more likely to fail while in use then it's not much compensation.

So has anyone got any experience with this computer please, I like making informed decisions

ps I'd probably have bought a vyper/vytec by now, but SWMBO says I've to raise the money FIRST. How unreasoanble is that
Anyone want to buy some REALLY good hifi. Cheap

I got one of these as part of my kit package about a year ago. I got the transmitter as well, basically because I had worked hard, and it was shiny. I have found it easy to use, simple to alter the settings should I need to, and easy to download all the dive logs onto the supplied PC software. like any gadget it is prone to a failure, through accident or bad luck, and I had the misfortune to have a duff one which went belly up after 12 dives. Oceanic were really great though, and I sent it back to be looked at. As they had no idea what the hell was wrong, they sent me a brand new one, which works just great, and does everything I need it to. my only complaint is that the audible alarm is not all that loud, but I check the PDC and SPG regulalry anyway, and the flashing red light has always attracted my attention to any warnings I need to be aware of. I have noticed that other computers (Like the Suunto) have an average depth function in the on screen logs, which the Atom doesn't, but when you have downloaded the logs onto your PC, the average depths are there for you. I am still learning how to use this little toy, and am about to do a nitrox course, which means I will have to learn more stuff about the computer as well, but from what I can see, and have experienced so far, I made a god choice when I bought the Atom.

If there is anything my limited knowledge in the field of anything diving related can add, then ask away.

Likewise i'm happy with the Atom. Bit of pain to bring up the tank pressure on the surface air integrated but fine in dive mode.

I've had some oddities with the download software don't know if anyone else has? Changing settings on the computer in metric then transferring to the watch it gets confused with imperial? But changing them directly on the watch is fine, Don't think the divelog database is particularly robust either mine got a bit confused. Thats the software though not the watch.

Test on the Atom at:

http://www.divernet.com/equipment/06...sts.shtml#atom

All sounds TOO confusing, must admit I like information I need to be displayed without having to press buttons. Was just thinking the other day that it would be nice if my Aladin could show my pony pressure as well as my main, and it looks like the atom could but it would cost me over £900!!!

On the same vein, if you check out the prices at the bottom of the article, it makes me wonder why anyone would buy the integrated set up at 699 rather than buying the Atom and a transmitter seperately.

The link to that article would not work for me, but I would like to say that there is only one button to press, and all the info you would need is displayed on either the main screen (depth, temp, NDC time remaining etc) or the alternate screen( air time remaining/tank pressure etc). One press, check what it says, and after a predetermined time (set by you) it reverst back to the main default screen.

I got the transmitter seperatley though......money saved is better in my pocket.
