SmartCom IrDa problem with XP Home SP2

Hi,
Has anyone got working Smartrack + Smartcom on a Win XP Home SP2 system.
?

On 2 systems, both loaded with XP Home, I get the same error when i
want to get the dives from the Smart Com.

The IrDa monitor finds and shows the "Smart Com" and for a while the
red leds are flashing. After that a pop up window shows:
"Error in infrared communication - Retry"

In XP I had McAfee (V9) closed, (I read in this forum could be a
problem )
In XP I had the Microsoft antispyware software closed
In the background no other programs running.

I tried various speeds ( till 9600) and other setting that were
possible in the IrDa device but they did not solve anything.

After a lot of testing on various systems, I think the problem is in XP

1:
Another system, also loaded with XP home SP2, same IrDa device: exact
the same problem. (so it could be a defective IrDa device)

2:
File transfer between 2 XP SP2 computers worked as it should work. (so the IrDa device is working fine) so the IrDa device is working well under XP SP2.

3:
On the 2e computer I installed Win98 SE, with the same IrDa device it
worked right away with Smart Com.

4:
On another system with Windows 2000 Professional but other IrDa device
it also worked fine

Conclusion:
It is the combination of XP SP2, with Smart Com that doe not work.
All others work well.!

Has anyone this combination XP - SmartCom got working then I very
Curious how he dit that?

Perhaps someone at Uwatec ?

Regards and hope someone has a solution .

Kees

I had exactly the same problem, I phoned Scubapro and they couldn't help me. Kept telling me it should work but it didn't.

I now download my dives from my dive computer to my work PC - XP Pro and then copy from there to my home laptop. Not ideal but works for me.

On holiday I was told that once you download SP2 there shouldn't be any difference between home and Pro.

As my dive computer died on holiday I haven't been able to test that theory.

If you ever work it out please let me know.

Hi Fiona,
Can you confirm that it works well on XP without SP2 installed ?

I can assure you that if you install SP2 on XP home it will not be upgraded to XP professional. (upgraded a lot of them)
With the same SP you can upgrade Home and Professional, but Home stays Home and Prof stays prof.
Best Regards
Kees

All I know is it works well on XP pro (work PC) but doesn't work on XP home (laptop).

No it didn't work on XP home before SP2 was installed.

Not at all true, I'm afraid. There are many differences between the Home and Pro versions of XP (too boring to go into, frankly) and applying the service pack to Home doesn't give you a 'Pro' version for free.

Sorry to disappoint!

Yep, Mr Bigblue is bang on with this one...
If you have XP home on your pc, my advice is tear it off immediately and XP Pro on...
Probably won't solve this particular problem but will more than likely save you lots of other ones...

The solution is not only to close McAfee but also to disable McAfee in running processes.

- start Windows Task Manager.
- go to Processes page.
- select Image Name "mcvsescn.exe".
- press button "End Process".
- start SmartTrak and do the infrared communication.
- after re-booting the PC McAfee process "mcvsescn.exe" is running again.

It works !
Now first I'm going to install another Antivirus program.

Post Sp2

XP-SP2 installs Windows Firewall, a useful but sometimes annoying piece of software that could be blocking communication over the IR. It shouldnt do but might. I run SmartTrak with a SmartTec on XP Home w/SP2 no probs.

Try disabling Windows firewall temporarily, if this works, you will need to configure the firewall when you turn it back on.
