Difference with VR2 & VR3

Have been asked this by a friend and I dont know answer but Im sure someone out there does?

He is thinking of buying a new computer, our diving is gonna get more technical next year with extended & deco dives...

so he wants to know whats the difference between the VR2 & VR3 besides the price! and the obivious of having the option of CCR,colour screen, ebooks.

The main diffrence is that the VR2 won't handle Helium.

VR3 does full trimix i think the VR2 does normoxic only or not at all.

Don't bother just get the VR3 or buy a Sherewater GF computer which is a brick but cheaper, more innovative and gives beater deco profiles. It is also more adaptive for use with CCR (if thats your thing). It has a couple of minor drawbacks. Its big, you have to delete all the gasses except the one's your diving (It holds 5 OC and 5 CCR), the wrist straps provided are totally useless and did i mention that its big.

However just for the GF deco alone, id get one. The VPMB option on the VR3is apparently rubbish so don't bother with that and to get a VR3 to the same spec as a Sherewatr its about £300more expensive.

Ex owner of two VR3s and now owner of a brick. Sorry I meen a Sherewater.

Correct. There are two VR2 models, one of which does nitrox, the other also does Normoxic.

The VR3 also handles more gasses per dive.

Mark,

A Sherewater GF ? Never heard of it. Any links to a web site would be great.

Sorry for hijacking the thread.

Ref the VR3 / VR2 speak to Barrie Law at Divertec Ltd
He knows them inside out.

Hers a link:

Shearwater Research Inc. - Computers for Diving

Big advantages:

Gradient Factor deco with multiple safety /agressive settings

Full multi gas TTS figures. Program in three gasses and it calculates tts on all three.

Battery lasts forever (well about two years aparently)

Can monitor all three CCR cells independently and so act as a back up CCR display

When you switch from CCR to OC it will calculate bailout on all available OC gasses starting with the most suitable for the present depth.

Primary differences are that the VR2 handles less gases (4 rather than the VR3's 10, if my memory serves me well). Also, the VR2 is limited to air, nitrox and normoxic trimix whereas the VR3 offers full trimix capability and the option of a VPM upgrade. It's worth bearing in mind that the VR3 is made from a solid chunk of aluminium whereas the VR2 uses a plastic case too!

As others have said, don't bother with the VR2 - if you're in the market for a VR then just save your pennies and go for the full VR3. Or failing that, learn to cut your own tables and use run times...

If you're not going to have mixes then there is a valid question as to the usefulness of the VR3. It really only becomes very useful when youhave multiple gases.

If you are only going to use one gas then there are far cheaper options out there that will give you the same functionality
