I may not be 100% accurate on this but I believe the VR3 gives a low battery warning when it gets below 1.4v, therefore a 3.6v will last a lot longer than a standard 1.5v or whatever it is. I believe the 3.6v lasted well over a year with a decent amount of dives.

Smile Bw Or Colour?
Normal LCD it lasts ages (year ++) and well worth money, and if you went for the colour screen it will last a season due to current drag...........normal battery will work but I was getting 4-6 dives on a normal 1.5v battery before the colour screen went onto battery save............not what you want at 40 metres in subdued light.
I would personnally recommend the the 3.6v as I have the backlight on with the B&W screen all the time,(due to ageing eyes) and it shows little drain.
RS supplies do them as well and 7 day shop .com

thanks chaps, i just changed mine and ballsed it up, think i'll get some 3.6v batteries cos i was surprised how little time it took before i needed to change the battery from new.

I changed mine and found the previous dives were wiped from memory. I changed the battery in quick time but I think the capacitor in the VR3 is probably a bit old or has a dry joint or something. Mines 3 - 4 years old now so I guess htis is expected. At least I can still see all the lines on the display though. I just use the Duracell ones, as I can source them locally, and only use the light if I need it.
