Hope someone can help here. What I would really like from a GPS is one that not only shows the path/ route but also the ascent/descent. This is not for diving but when I go for walkies. I don't mind it not showing on the unit itself but on a PC for example after downloading. So in all a 3d route.
Does anyone know of such system? If so where is the best place to get one online?

The garmin etrex summit has a built in altimeter. I've just got the basic etrex so I can't comment how good it is. Mine gives altitude I don't think it logs it.

The garmin website is very imformative and useful.

Magellan Tracker , a very good bit of kit.... I've lost my PC lead , or i would have been able to download you a chart & pic .....

It logs the ascent & descent from the minute you turn it on,

All GPS should show current altitude if working in 3D mode which require at least 4 SV,s ( satellites to be accurate to approx 10maccurracy. Most modern hand held gps are 12 channel and are quick to respond to changes. I havent used any PC software though. Have a look at Garmen or maggellen websites for more info.
