| Imported post Have to agree with Steve on this. We often see comments on here (and elsewhere) about not relying on just your computer - the vytec encourages you to do just that. Although others do happily use it in that way (with back-up tables) I feel it is likely (of course not always) to encourage complacency in planning. I have the vyper, if I plan on doing an accelerated deco dive then it goes into gauge mode and I'll use tables. Back-up is a watch (also good for more accurate timing of stops) tho I'd like to have a dive timer. Steve, you know this could be mis-construed(sp?) as having DIR leanings. I'd better invert quickly. Urgh no thats worse!

| Imported post I wouldnt splash out on a Vytec either.... had one for a while, but it generated horrible ammounts of deco and all in the wrong place too. Apart from which, I cant see the point in a 3 gas nitrox puter. If Im on 3 gasses..... at least one tin is gonna be holding squeaky stuff!

ok if the computer was to fail my first choice would be a second vr3 and by the summer that will be the case. a major reason i prefer to trust a computer is it gives a solution for an ascent despite the worst possible scenarious happening during a dive. going ccr diving only makes this more important especially when bailout to open circuit gases has to be factored in. granted the cost of a decent computer is a factor but with vr3's now available from £550 i think you will see many more divers using them, some will stay with tables 'fair enought' cheers barrie

| Imported post Table diving is too restrictive and a big PTA I hate it. The vase majority of non DIR technical divers these days are considering or already own a VR3. Bearing in mind the computer has only been available for four years it has made a huge impact on the technical diving comunity. Remember dive computers were shunned when they first came out divers wwere told they would get bent or die using them but these days how many divers do you see planning their dives on the PADI tables or wheel on the boats. The vast majority of sports divers use a computer with no back up tables and usualy no back up computer. Incidents related to this practice are very few and far between. Tables are still used in technical diving because thats all that was available untill the VR3 came along four years ago. The die hards and the hard up still use tables and so do the extreem technical divers doing stuff even the VR3 cant cope with. Mind you, when you read the reports of the multiple 125m dives on the Britanic all done using the VR3 you start to realise that even at the top end of the game computers are starting to make an impact. The Vytec is conservitave and yes its not directly He compatable but you can do deep air dives and use two deco gas or like me you can do 50m dives on 21/25 trimix and run the profle on air with the Vitec because the He would reduce your deco not add to it below 30%. The Vytec is no where nere as good as the VR3 but its £400 cheeper so what do you expect. Mark Chase

Mark, can you explain your comment. My reason is: I'm thinking of doing a normoxic ticket maybe later this year or early next (depends on how much diving I can get in this year in readiness for the course) but don't want to be going below 50. A little DIR perhaps but I don't like the idea of going below 40m without a little head-clearing He. In fact having never gone below 40m I would like to do so once He qual'd - but maybe I'm just being a wuss. I don't think so tho!
