Diving the Zenobia in Cyprus a couple of weeks back showed me just how bad the problem is with the Suunto computers - though the newer DS ones may be better(?)

So, in Cyprus, we were diving air just because that's all we could easily get, and doing 35m ish dives. Didn't do any consecutive days, but had a day diving, a day off, a day diving, etc. Both diving and doing deco on the Suunto. On one dive, the second of the day, we left the bottom (20m) after 30mins, showing just over 20mins to the surface. Knowing how the Suunto behaves, we did most of the deco at 4-5m, and did the final 15mins at just 3m (apparently in the "ideal zone" for the Suunto). To complete this 20mins of deco took just under an hour!

I'm now actively working on making myself some tables, because the Suunto clearly just isn't effective with deco of more than ~20mins, just makes up numbers which bear no relation to what it will actually get you to do.

Pretty much my thoughts, to be honest! For short deco it's fine, which is most of my diving really - we only ended up with such long deco in Cyprus because we didn't have nitrox, which I pretty much always use in the UK.

However, last night and today i've been working on something similar to ratio deco, but better Basically pattern-spotting with V-Planner output, but not limited to standard gases and things - tailored to the way I dive. I'm expecting to end up with something halfway between tables and ratio deco, but not entirely sure what yet. It's something I started almost a year ago after my trimix course, but kinda forgot about it and never got it finished. Hopefully get a bit further this time!

Have you tried DECO ON THE PIE It's like ratio deco, except that it's fairly conservative so you won't die screaming in agony. [1]

Ok. It's not perfect, but I would be more than happy to dive it's profiles (and have done when I've had a computer problem).

Janos

[1] - No guarantees are given. It's a series of patterns I developed by looking at conservative Bulhman profiles. It doesn't meant that Mr. Bulhman was correct or I haven't made some mistakes along the line.

First time I've read that Janos. It's a little complicated for me tbh, but very clever indeed. Running the numbers a few times, it's not bad at all mate. The bit I don't like is the "if this, then this" parts as I'd forget them. The bit I DO like is that you have a limit on the deco, which means all of a sudden ascent rates etc are not so critical and everything is just a bit more forgiving. [1]

[1] This paragraph may be complete bolox.
