| It's a small world and a long year, no doubt our paths may cross on one of the YD gigs. I'll buy the burgers, you get the coffee, no hard feelings. James

| Imported post <font color='#000080'>As for carrying backups, an indicator of depth and time is an important bit of dive gear. If you need one, take two. I have a D-timer in the water with me even on 10-15m diving, I check the computer for no deco time at the planned max depth or a depth it's likely I'm going to be staying at, and then work out how many minutes into the dive that will be. Whenever I check my computer I check my D-timer, and make sure my sums are still ok. This means that either can go nipples skyward and I can comfortably continue the dive, provided I don't get any deeper, or if it's the first dive in a series (I know almost all the no deco times from the PADI tables, which I trust). If it' a deco dive, in the event of a computer failure it's out of there, doing the last stops showing on the computer plus some more or the bail-out plan. I can't stress strongly enough how a dive tmer you can get second hand for £20 could be really useful to you, and if you've been skirting on the edge of deco or are in deco it could save you getting bent. A bad stop is as good as no stop. One of the guys was told that at the pot not a million years ago. James, Jen, remember how easy it is to misinterpret what's being written and the way it's being said. I'm sure there was no offence intended by either of you. So kiss and make up. Ok, I'll do the kissing. Oh, and on the console wrist debate, definitely wrist. It's dead easy that way, especially if you're reeling in as mentioned, or doing something else with your hands. Digs. |

| Imported post <font color='#000080'>If you're going to put it anywhere, have one off the wrist. And carry some sort of backup. Tim- unless you're being a troll then don't be an arse. I always glance at the watch on the way in and know my no-stop time for the depth so if it all goes whoopee then it will all be alright in the end. And being a bit of a paranoid android I also carry a backup computer... and tables tucked away somewhere. Like the HUD idea though. Why can't they have it on cars?

I did have a spare watch and depth gauge so it was back to the shotline, sensibly up to 5 and just hung for longer than I knew my 'pooter would have told me(not that I pay any attention to the thing anyhoo). I would have been making it up as I went along if I didn't have the back-ups. Literally counting seconds in my head, guessing where 3mtrs was. In fact, I've got a further back-up depth gauge(of sorts) on my DSMB line. It's marked 3, 4, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, etc mtrs. Not ideal, but any port in a storm and all that. I've always got the DSMB on every dive. Peter |

| Imported post Perhaps I'm being a bit naive here, and sorry if that is the case, but I have a depth guage on my console, and it's pretty easy to judge the speed that you're going upwards. Making sure that your kit is serviced properly and well within test is also very important. My own personal view is that the degree of redundancy I need depends on the kind of diving I'm doing. If I was doing deco, then I would have a lot more than I would take for a 20m or less dive. But then the difference with deco and more recreational diving is that you are taught that you must rely on your own kit, and no - one elses. I think that there are also big differences between UK sea diving and bimbling around in 30 degree water where you can see a lot more than just your hand in front of your face.
