Mind you, I've also got a Quantum. On my second one, but I sent back the first after about 15 months and got sent a new one by return post.

Another vote for Cochrane, really nice computers.

Shearwater beats the VR£ hands down any day if you're going for the upper end of the scale. Second hand units come up now and again, Janos currently has one for sale.

Cheers,

Stuart

The Apeks seems to do the job but the Uwatec 2G seems to be a turkey. Mine had it's buttons pack up after about a week and then died completely a few months later. The most expensive bottom timer I have ever bought at £250.

If you think that there is any possibility of progressing through nitrox to trimix and then onto CCR then the Shearwater might be worth looking at. You just buy a different unlock code as and when the application changes so the entry level isn't silly money whilst being more expensive than the recreational nitrox computers. It uses GF so you can easily customise the algorithm to suit your style, it will monitor 3 cells when used for CCR, user changeable battery and a lovely clear display. All round better than the VR£ IMO.

Alternatively just cut tables and buy a couple of decent BT's.

I liked my Cochran until the batteries went flat (cannot download or change date/time or ppO2), now its just a bottom timer. At least the later models don't trash the stored data if the batteries go flat.

I use a Nitek 3. Have had no real problems with my unit.

Roger if you don't mind me asking why the VR3? Surely there are better computers out there in that price bracket so what attracts you to the VR3 over say the X1 or the Shearwater?

I am interested because I have never understood why the VR3 seems to be so popular when there are so many options at that end of the market. Genuine question BTW...

How old was it? My Cochran Commander, the old green model, doesn't trash stored data if the batteries went flat. Maybe it needs the backup battery replaced? Not that I ever bought the download kit for either of them.
