Wireless AI setup

Hi all,

Nowadays a number of dive computers have air integration. I do not want to go into the benefits or not of AI. I am after the set up that people prefare to use. For this tread I am refering to the wireless AI.

Wireless tranmitters are designed to be attached to the firststage. Some people argue that this set up might not be the best solution as the transmitter could be knocked of during a dive or when handling the dive kit.

I have seen three setups:

1. transimtter attached directly to the first stage
2. transmitter attached to a short 6-8" hose
3. transmitter atached to a quick release on first stage.

whats you opinion? which one do you prefer? any other solutions?

thanks
lud

First, I don't use AI. I won't go into the reasons why, but here is my take on the three options.

1. that is where the transmitter is supposed to go.
2. Adds in another potential failure point - where is the benefit? 6-8 inches of hose jsut sticks out and becomes an even worse entanglement hazard.
3. Adds in another potential failure point - I have only seen QR's that go onto a hose, so i can't see a benefit in this one either.

But I am sure people who dive with them will have a more valid opinion.

I use AI attached directly to the first stage and have not had any issues with poor signal transmission etc. It is protected to some extent by the LP hoses. I have never had this banged, neither has it been damaged by handling.

Several buddies also use like this and as far as I'm aware, they have not had problems either. As Scubee said, this is where it is designed to go.

I have seen someone with a ahort HP hose, but when I asked he could not say what the reason was, other than he had been told to do that by a buddy / instructor / shop (can't exactly remember to be honest).

I have never seen attached to a QR. Why would you want to remove the transmitter other than to swap to a different reg which takes about a minute with a spanner, or to change the batttery. Either way a QR is superfluous and an extra fail point.

Cheers, John

I have my transmitter straight onto the first stage and also have never had any problems with poor signal. It sits higher than the lp hoses as i have the hoses coming out lower as they are more than likely to be the snag hazard, I have never banged it or damaged it even when exploring some of the wrecks in the red sea.

its not because of poor signal but not to get the transmitter damaged.
