Question Suunto Vyper Reliability.

I've almost decided on the Vyper as its a similar price as the Gekko and both do as much (and more) as I need, the only reason for me choosing the Vyper is that it has a better display and a backlight.

After having a look back through some old posts on here I've seen that a few people have had trouble with their Vypers, is this a common trend or can I buy one with confidence?

Thanks.

I had a Vyper for over 5 years, never had any problems & just the 1 battery change.

I wouldn't hesitate to get one again

i've had a vytec (non-ds) for a while and no problems whatsoever, apart from a battery change which i did myself. however, just a thought, suunto computers really want you in the 3 - 5 m range for "decompression" and aren't happy below this. i've even clocked up deco at 8m on the way up after a max depth of 40m!

in comparison, if i had a little deco, say 5 - 10 min on my old aladin, it would usually clear by the time i got from 40m to 6m.

don't get me wrong, i'm not criticising the suuntos for being conservative, rather that they want to rush me straight from 40 m to 3 m. you can of course do as i do, ignore the computer, do some deeper stops and then go about your business, but if you want to keep mr computer happy, you may have to give it more time in 3 - 5m range.

this may or may not affect your purchase, like i said, just a thought.

I have had a vyper since I started diving (6years), and apart from a battery change has given me no trouble whatsoever.

It gives you a safety stop of 3 minutes on every dive below 10m, and provided you do this above 5.9m it is happy. It is absoluely spot on for no-deco diving.

Been using a vytec since July 2001-350 dives and apart from a battery and protective cover change it just keeps going.
