You will rapidly get pissed off with a Vytec DS as it makes dive planning quite difficult. OK if you are happy to make up the dive plan as you go along, and never be quite sure what stops it will ask for, but it's not ideal. That's what I found anyway. Depends on how disciplined your approach is I guess.

wouldn't recommend th vytec either (my current computer). you'll get battered for deco.

That's what I was thinking, If you run your dive with tables cut from a programme such as v-planner which seems to be the programme of choice and a bottom timer, would you use your planned bottom time and depth at the max/near to depth limit, multilevel the dive, say a wreck sitting 10m proud and run the stops as on your slate which would add some conservatism?

depends as well what your buddy's using - make, model and software edition, algorithm etc., it's easier if your both being given similar deco information

My regular buddy's just finished his advanced nitrox and deco procedures and has a vr3, I'm trying to get mine completed by the end of june so am trying to work out what would work best for me until I can afford a full deco computer which will be used as a backup to my run times. So I guess it would be fine to use my run times and bottom timer when I dive with him and use the info on his computer as a backup?

If your buddy's using a VR3 then the DS will give you a different schedule (one of my buddies has a VR3, I have a DS, they want us to do somewhat different things).

Why don't you just both run tables?

we use z-plan or v-plan as back up and just wing it on the vr3's. if your doing your course with someone like lord brockie he'll set you straight anyway

If he's running a VR3, then have a look at HL planner. It's free if you do a google search. I have a VR3 and its nice to have, but by no means essential. There is very little time difference or benefit for that matter if you start doing square profiles eg, going down to a wreck, staying for a while and then going straight up. VR3 as a multilevel computer is crap to be honest. It throws in deep stops when you least expect them. On a trip to scapa last year, we had 10 bent VR3's on the first day between 2 boats.

If i was going down down the technical route all over again, i'd just run it on tables and spend the money on something else. . . .You'll have to cut tables anyway as back up. . . .
