| The Gekko is a brilliant computer for the money..... there is a special software patch that lets you download it to you PC, just the same way as the Vyper...There is loads of information on YD about the Gekko against the other entry level 'puters, My advice would be to look for a second hand Vyper.... you can pick them up for £100. It has a backlight an gauge mode in adition to all the Gekko's features.... The gauge mode is whats needed to use it as a dive timer when using tables. there is one currently for sale for £100 here.... Kit for sale incl. Suunto Stinger / Kowalski - BSAC Scuba Diving Forums

| The first computer I bought was a Gekko. It did me for 200ish dives around the world and I would say, for the price, it is a fine piece of gear. I never found the lack of a backlight an issue, the phosphorescent display was perfectly adequate. My current Oceanic Geo has a backlight but I never use it! I wasn't worried by the lack of download either as I have no need for it, YMMV.

| Gekko gets my vote as a good allrounder. You can download from it, so the only difference from a Vyper is the backlight. Only traded upto a Vytec DC after a moment of madness in Maldives Duty free. |

| My wifes got one and it really is a good cheap computer Does Nitrox mixes too |

| I bought mine a couple of month's ago. My first dive pooter. I like it, cos it's simple, like me! I just need to know how to use it and understand it, but I'm glad I got this one as a pooter virgin. Down at 19m in Stoney, on the Stanegarth when it was pretty dark and dingy I could still read the screen without a torch to encourage it. So no regrets from me for my choice! So far. Though if anyone could point me in the right direction as to how to download. Don't want to do it yet, but might well do in the future! Ta!

| I have the vyper and wish I'd saved my money and bought the gekko. I never use a backlight as I tend to shine torch at things I want to see. Who downloads profiles to pc anyway? Only downside is same with the gekko - if you want to do 2 mix diving in the future you will need another computer. Suunto seem to generate love hate feelings in dive clubs. Our DO hates their extra 3mins safety stops. Personally I'd rather hang around for 3 mins than spend a few hrs in a pot somewhere. I have bought my vyper before other club members have bought their cressi achimede and uwatec aladins and watched all of them fail / error and suffer battery failure. My first battery still on 4 bar after 4 yrs (because I don't use backlight!) get a gekko if you don't plan on being a teckie soon <M |

Twinsetmad has pointed out my statement above is incorrect (which it is)! For absolute clarity the Gekko can't be used as a bottom timer.
