| Computers & Dive Timers: Discuss Apeks Quantum in the Dive Kit and Equipment forums: I'm very impressed with mine........clear display, easy adjustments, and excellent value at £160! Slight niggle with the backlight but use ... |

| Thank you all... Well I started this thread and now I have one. So only feel it fair to say what I think of it!! The main issue I have is the run time figures are too small. When in "gage" (sic) mode the big display is a very useful water temp! the run time is tiny (my eyes are getting old..) I have also cheated with it and done a mix dive with the comp set to nitrox. The run time issue is again the niggle as this is now shown on screen two and needs a button press. The screen one display shows deco time and deepest stop. On wednesday's dive I noticed that one of the LEDs has packed up so the display now looks like one of those cheap digital clocks with a stripe missing - the sort British Rail used to have on their "informative" display panels. For the price it is still a reasonable buy, esp. if you don't use run times with backup tables!! The strap is only just long enough and nowhere near as robust looking as the wife's Suunto. I have also had to re-boot it as it got "stuck" in gauge mode for a week once. But at least you can - so that's something! Backlight (as mentioned) is crap. I guess you get what you pay for in life and its cheap! 6/10 Chris

| Apeks have just sent back (FOC) a new machine all the way to Italy... 2 out of ten for the 'puter 22 out of ten for their customer service The decision to rebadge the Nitek is odd - if the problems I had are more common this will do Apeks no good. If they had left it as a Dive Rite then the poo would be on that brand not Apeks.... Still think their regs are world-class stuff. See how the new machine goes and I'll post back in a month or two. Chris

| I'm not Popeye, but... The strap is the only negative I have so far. It's probably ok for a wetsuit, but there's no chance it's going to go over my drysuit and undersuit. I have to use it over my glove, which is a pain, as it means I have to put on one glove, then the computer, then the other glove; and if I want to take my gloves off after a dive, then the computer has to come off as well. I've emailed Apeks and they say that out of 2000 sold, this problem has never been highlighted. It may sound like a trivial point, but it puts me in the wrong frame of mind before I even get in the water. And it means I have to take it off to take my gloves off. They said that they measured it and found it to be shorter than other computer straps and were going to get the Japanese manufacturer to do longer ones, but I need to do something about it as well. Any ideas. |

| Bungee between last hole and clasp? Or replace completely with bungee? Matt |
| ||||
| I find the strap just goes round with about 1cm to spare. The Suunto is much longer and more robust. It should be possible to lengthen the strap by attaching a new strap to the existing one using the holes to rivet the two together. Brass rivets would be the best. It does seem a shame to mullah a perfectly good strap though. My replacement unit is so far behaving itself...... Chris

| I replaced the strap with bungee on my Mares computer just for ease. Nothing more annoying than fiddling with a strap and buckle with cold hands. With bungee it just slips on and off with no problems. I am getting tempted by this computer though. What else does on the market does the things it does so that i can comparee and contrast before i make the final choice? 1)Vyper 2)Vytec 3)???? Help? |
