Question Can we add a time limit to Polls and New Posts?

Is it within the powers of the Admins to stop the date on a thread being updated so it appears under "New Posts" when all that has happened is somebody has clicked on a poll vote?

It would make the "New Posts" selection far more useful as you would only get "New Posts" ie: something to read.

Not an answer to your problem I'm afraid, but when you create a poll there is an option to set it to expire after (say) 30 days, which helps stops the 'reappearing poll' problem. Perhaps we could make this a default?

Unfortunately, this would prevent others voting in those polls where they might want to and/or adding a relevant post to that thread, and as we've seen of late, new joiners have a wealth of experience and knowledge to offer, so limiting their input wouldn't/doesn't make sense. Also, the majority of diving related polls have a 'timeless' quality, espcially where diver safety or safe practice is concerned, and don't deserve to have a time limit place on them..

Nigel,

Titles sometimes get changed to make them either more representative of their content or reflect some key asepct of that content; yours was how can we prevent them, polls, popping back up when they've only had a vote and not a post placed in them. Janos made a suggestion as to one way he thought we might get around your apparent/obvious irritation; I countered with why that is not a good idea.

Also titles can be changed to allow them (key words, themes and phrases) to show up in member searches more easily.

Sorry mate, you're just gonna have to accept it.

And no - this thread isn't going to develope into some free-wheeling 'free speech' treatise that some of you are so fond of.

And, as per the 'How to post on YD' guidelines:

Quote:
* Write clearly and well.
Remember that people from all around the world will be reading your post so keep your language as clear as you can, be sensitive to regional variations in the use of English and patient with other contributors who may be learning the language. Try to minimize spelling errors, keep your message short, and avoid writing in capitals because it looks like you are shouting and is also quite difficult to read on screen. Use descriptive subject lines so that you give people with limited time enough information to decide if they want to read further.

ok but is it possible so it doesn't appear as a new post when all that has happened is that someone has voted without posting?

There is an option in the AdminCP somewhere that can be used to decide whether votes bump the poll or not.

Well, it is cheap stuff and it comes almost from the local gardening store, but it works fine and it's very solid. We tried to destroy one by hitting it with a hammer... we succeeded but we really had to hit it hard - http://www.stde.ch/en/faq.php

I'm glad you didn't say "isn't going to develop" otherwise I would have been very disappointed. Develope - sorm form of running?

Anyway, I would just like to say that I am very fond of "free-wheeling 'free speech' treatises" and I think that ....... er .........

Jules, I can understand why some folks might want this to be the case, but if someone votes in a poll, then, conversely, there may be other members tracking that poll to see the split in percentages of the options and how they are being voted on. Disabling that function would deny them that ability.

Yes but if they are that interested they will have it as a subscribed thread and will keep checking it.

Perhap a poll to see whether the fuctionality of polls should be changed.

Gavin
