Question using host sites

Why is it that in some cases pics I have posted on a thread are now no longer there and there is just a little box with a red cross I dont know how these things work and I am very untechnical but other pics i have put on here are still 'in situ' on various threads. I used tinypics hosting and followed the instructions that porg had posted in a very helpful thread some time ago.

Also I have now just loaded a lot of mull/skye holiday pics onto photobucket, i dont really understand how these things work but do i need to keep the pics on my computer hard drive for this to work?

Sorry if these questions seem very basic to all you technical bods but it takes me a while to get the hang of these things and understand them and I would really appreciate it if someone has a moment to explain.

if you uploaded the pics to a hosting site, then there's no need to keep them on your computer for them to carry on working.

I don't know much about these sites, but could there be a time limit on how long you can keep the pictures on there???

If you uploaded them to a site you were paying for you shold be able to expect them to stay for as long as you keep paying.
If you aren't paying they will stay as long as it suits the site owners.
If you delete them from your own machine you can just bet they will be off the site you are not paying for in days.

Sorry but this is the real world. My stuff is on my site, on my machine and backed up on CDs in my desk draw at work.
