Google spiders

Ok, just been viewing "who's online" and we have several "google spiders". What is a google spider? I get the urge to get a dyson and suck it up.

Are they the little bots that crawl all over the web looking for info make the search engine work? Sounds like it.

Its a software program which reads your web site and reports back to Google so you get listed on it. They're not serious (but can be a pain if you want to keep parts of the site private). Luckily they check for a file called robots.txt and follow the rules you put in it. You can find out more about web robots and spiders here.

As Nick says, their job is to find keywords supplied by a website and report them back to their master: Google - so that the next time you use google and search for those words, then that site is included in the returned set of search results..

Just been on to Google and searched for 'aclivity', and there I was - on the results list!

I feel like I have arrived.

Same here, I'm also included from the Divernet site. However if I try just my surname it will only go to the Port Wine sites.

Blimey, never heard of this sort of thing, just did a search for me and there are loads. Luckly most aren't me, they are about babies and breastfeeding.
