| Diving with a numpty Have any of you ever had a memorable dive for the wrong reasons? Well I had quite a few when I first started diving some years ago, the main reason was my dive buddy! I didn’t really want to dive ........ well those idiots have a death wish don’t they. Anyway my wife was desperate to learn and her and a friend of mine (more like an acquaintance) talked me into learning. Having started the theory and pool work and getting hooked my wife had to put her training on hold for health reasons, but I continued with my (acquaintance) dive buddy and as many of you will have found out, if you dive with a club every one always makes sure you are put with your dive buddy. Unfortunately for me my dive buddy nicknamed Polaris (unknown to him) had a habit of using his BC as an elevator. He also tended to agree a dive plan and then piss off and do his own thing, and it was up to me to follow, if I didn’t he would notice any way. I remember laughing to myself when a dive master on a course we were doing buddied with him to show him how to deploy a DSMB. He sent his bag up and signalled to Polaris to put a finger through his D ring which Polaris did. He then signalled up and before he could do anything else found himself on the surface surrounded by shit loads of string....... yes Polaris had hit the up button and dragged his buddy to the surface! Lucky it was only 6m. (by the way many people including me did tell him not to use his BC like this, but he wouldn’t be told). Finally we were at Stoney Cove had dived on the staingarth and swam off looking for the bus but didn’t find it. At 22 meters I signalled that we should terminate the dive, I signalled up and before I could signal ok Polaris had gone in a stream of bubbles no doubt intent on landing next to our car in the car park. At 6m my computer said to stop so I did my 3 min during which time my buddy laid in the water face down waiving his hand at me to hurry up and come up!...........he was keen to get away. A few days later I rang him to arrange a dive but he kept putting me off, eventually he admitted that he had felt unwell when he got home and ended up in the chamber with a bend. We never dived together again....... he hasn’t dived at all since. I was so pleased as I had hated diving with him, but it was soooo hard to get out of it, and have never been before or since glad some one got a bend...... he was an accident waiting to happen.....probably fatal ! Any one else dived with a numpty? Rustferret |

| Fortunatley I've never been in the situation diving with a numpty, But I know myself well enough to know that if I did, I would'nt hesitate to tell him after the first dive, that I did'nt think him safe, and he's an accident waiting to happen, Of course, he's gonna be peeved, and probably won't talk to you again, but that's no great loss. [Edit, I did once dive with a numpty ( a YD'er who's since been banned ) and also he no longer lives in this country, so you lot are probably quite safe from him ) how upon arriving at stoney to do a planned 35 metre dive and a known and self confessed gas guzzler, had only 150 Bar in his 15 Litre cylinder, He was going to kit up, but I suggested to him that he get his cylinder topped up, but he said that he did'nt want to pay £3.00 for just 70bar of Air, but I said that it would be a really good idea if he did get it done, of if he did'nt want to pay it, then he could use my spare 15 L cylinder which was full, He reluctantly he agreed to get his filled up and set off to the fill shop to get himself sorted, he then came back about 4 minutes later and said that, that was it done all filled up. Great so we start the dive as a 3, myself, my buddy & numpty, and went down to around 28 metres, where I started to get a bit cold, ( I did'nt have hood on ) and I signalled that I was cold and going back up to the 22 shelf, When we got to the 22m shelf, and 9 minutes into the dive, my buddy asked the numpty how much air he had, and he signalled 70 bar So we start to assend at a quickish but safe rate, till we got to 10 metres, then numpty stopped assending and went to look at some fish, even though at this stage, he only had 40 bar left, my buddy and me almost grabbed him to make him carry on his assent, we got to 6 metres, and had my octo in my hand and was facing him, ready to give to him at any moment, when we got out he had about 15 bar left in his cylinder, while on our surface intervil, he made a lame excuse, and left the cove without doing the second dive, ( thank god ) We since found out, that He'd lied to me about getting the cylinder filled, and only started the dive with 150 bar. It may interest you to know that he's now a dive master on Foreign shores.

| [diving with numpty and jim shaw) i remember this dive very well, don't know what made me ask how much air numpty had.glad i did though,i was just goin to go to the staingarth when i thought i just ask to be on the safe side.(may i just add i was the least qualified and the least experianced diver out of the three of us)i knew jim usually matched me on air him on a 15ltr me on a 12ltr wasnt sure about the numpty.what i did learn from this, dont rely on others to tell you what air they have ask.even if you feel silly better safe then sorry. also happened to me in zante this year.the dive guide asked for the first diver to reach 100 bar to let him know. i was diving with someone from london just buddied while on hols, (jim had gone home ) i asked him what air he had, he was at 80 bar he hadn't let davie know,i did.he sent a d.m back to the boat with him.i'd still got 110 bar left we carried on the dive for another 30mins. my question was when was he going to tell the dive guide.

| i was on a club dive with a more qualified and experienced diver in stoney cove. when we went to decend he couldnt quite get under so he started to fin like mad to get down - i called the dive. the last time i saw him dive at stoney, he came out fins first after a (luckily) short, shallow bimble as he had not got enough weight AND lost control of his dry suit.
