Diving in the Manchester Ship Canal?

Has anyone been diving in Manchester Ship Canal or in or around Salford Quays.

The Ship canal also looks really peacefull around the Viaduct area.

It's got to be worth a try or even just a laugh for a day!

Anyone interested?

Anyone tried it? if so any fish life?

What's the legal side or risks, ie permission or a ship going over your head?

Yeah, I've dived Albert Dock and one of the other Liverpool Docks a number of times. Either a striding entry or via a very slippery slip.

Much better done in winter - visibility is quite good unless someone is in there before you who has finned up the many feet of silt on the bottom. Only dived it in summer once as I wanted to try out some new kit, never again, it was pea soup green - 'orrible.

There was a fair bit of life (non fish variety) dead mens fingers type thingies knocking about. A couple of champagne magnums (it was after millenium celebrations) and the odd traffic cone.

We dived it between Christmas and New year once with snow on the ground - the traffic wardens thought it highly amusing.

You have to get written permission from the Docks authorities to dive there and they have lots of rules about when you can and cannot dive there. They want you to have an smb on the surface at all times too. Guys come and check up on you when you arrive to make sure you have made prior arrangements. You have to provide a contact number and evidence of insurance.

Is an experience and ok in winter. Give it a try. We haven't been back for ages so have lost the necessary paperwork - give them a ring, I'm sure they will help.

Ok, just re-read your original post...... u want manchester docks NOT liverpool!!! Anyway, may be of interest to you.

Cheers

Lyv

Yazzy: Devils Bridge, sounds good, I will do a search for it.

Air Guzzler: FAB I look forward to hearing from again from you.

Puddle Diver: Interesting. Shame there's no fish life.

And yes, probally not right in the head but! Would like to try the ship canal. Plus it's really local.

When we dived it last year there were a few large plaice in there, you need good fining technique though as one of our group stuck a yard brush in the silt right down to his elbow

You can't dive there without a permit though.

Safe diving,
Steve

ive got the albert dock in my logbook, god it was grim,i remember it was a club trip, and we had a coach up there, the security were well chuffed as we manged to get loads of signs back! and there were loads of swag that shop lifters had thrown in the dock while they were being chased!, there were loads of eels and shit loads of mud, viz was down to touch, although i do recall we may have not follwed best practise and may have had one or two shandies before the dip
