Question Halcyon Explorer Vs. Evolve

Hello All,

I am looking at going over to twinset diving (faber twin 12's) and wondered if anyone had any thoughts on the Explorer 55 Vs. Evolve 60.

I currently dive 15 Ltr. with an Halcyon Eclipse 40. From what I have read so far the Evolve is simular to how the Ecplise behaves in the water according to one forum thread? The guy how posted that also said that the Evolve was too long for Faber cylinders, does anyone else have an opinion?

Thanks for any advice!

you wont need a 60. a 40 will be fine. I've dived twin 12 heisers - heavier than fabers, plus 2 stages, plus 8kgs lead, plus bits on a 40 - very comfortably..

if you are using fabers - I strongly suggest you stick to the explorer. The Evolve will be too long for your cylinders.*

If you do go the evolve route - because of the doughnut shape, rather than the horseshoe - then I would consider changing your tins for either Heisers or ECS - as they are longer.

* the evove is quite a bit longer than the explorer and can get caught underneath the cylinders when sat down causing crush marks on the inner bladder.

hope this helps..

and please tell us a bit about yourselve in the introductions forum..

What he said !

The 60 is like a small life raft, the Evolve 40 will be more than enough for your needs if you want the donut wing.

If you're not stuck on Halcyon then you might consider the Midnight for these guys FROG DIVE GEAR a donut wing for less money than the Evolve.

It got a lot of interest at Dive 2006 and seems to be a well made product.

I dive an Evolve 40 with twin Faber 12s. I don't think the risk of catching the wing under the tanks is as great as some make out (courting disaster here ) so long as you're careful when sitting down or placing the tanks down. One thing you might fnd is that compared to the Explorer, the Evolve provides more lift further down the tanks, and this may result in slighty different weight placements to sort out your trim. Both are excellent wings, well made, simple and do the job. I have no complaints about mine.

PS: It took you a long time to make that first post, eh. Don't be shy...

Hi,

You can always give me a shout and try them alongside each other. That way you'll know which one suits you best. It often boils down to how the slightly different shapes trim you out in the water.

Let me know if you want a trial.

Rich

I have an explorer and am using an evolve at the moment too. The evolve is great in the water BUT I got a couple of liitle holes in it on the bottom. The reason for that is simple. The bottom and is very long and if you make the mistake of having doubles with bands too low, the wing gets caught under tha tanks.
But if you avoid that, the evolve is for sure a pretty neat wing to dive in.
