DIR single tank reg configuration

i'm looking to buy my first set of regs next month and have decided on Apeks. I've also been doing a bit of readin about DIR and the OOA practice of taking the reg in the mouth seems to make the most sense to me. So am I right in thinking that what I could purchase for a suitable single tank set up is -

Apeks DS4 with XTX40 on a 2m hose for primary DV
XTX40 on a standard hose (not 'octo' or yellow)

Also does this mean that 'if' I progress to a twinset then I'll just need to purchase a second DS4?

Hi Robbie,

that config could work, however it is better to have a 22" or 24" hose on the backup reg.

You are right that to move to doubles you just add a 2nd DS4.

Pretty much spot on there, although I can't comment on the use of a DS4 with a singles rig. I use a ScubaPro MK20 which, IIRC, mad good hose routing for a singles rig and excellent hose routing for a doubles rig. It has been quite some time since i dived singles though

Thanks fellas. As I said I'm just getting started but i'm trying to make sure that the stuff I buy is fairly 'future proof'.

Roll on the dive show!

As per both John and Neil. I use the 22" hose on backup and the long hose on primary on Scubapro regs. Works really well with STA and single wing on a 15L for shallow reef dives that I do with my club.

What you've listed certainly works well and also provides a sensible and logical upgrade path if and when you decide to move to a twinset. If you're looking to follow the DIR path then don't forget to also include a mineral glass pressure guage connected via a 24" HP hose. I'd personally recommend the 63mm DIRZone guage that Knackers sells - I have about 6 of these and they're great! Link here...

re: the length of backup reg hoses. I personally favour 22" for Scubapro 1st stages and 24" for Apeks 1st stages...

I suggest you actually get a 2.1m hose, 2m is a tad too short.

cheers,

I'd go for a 50 rather than a 40 as you can adjust that annoying hiss you get when it beds in without any tools.

Thanks. So standard DIR kit would be a pressure gauge with a computer, more expense! I don't suppose you have a 'spare' one out of those six?!

I'm not intending to go fully DIR but I like to do a lot of research and pick and choose what makes most sense to me.
