DSMB Filling What is the recommended, DIR, method of filling a DSMB. Dave

Hi Dave, Welcome to YD .... an intro is not compuslory but it does help people when they answer your questions to know where to pitch the answer at. We had a thread recently on here about shooting a bag with a spool a la DIR ...so check out this thread here especially the video in post 2. HTH Mal

Thanks Mal, My intro is posted in the Introductions secton. "I am a BSAC instructor currently with a University club. About 2 years ago I 'adopted' the DIR method but have not done any DIR courses." There are 2 videos in YouTube one shows the diver removing his reg and breathing directly into the blob the other fills the blob with exhaust air. Just wondered what the pescribed DIR method is, my guess was to use the exhaust air, but breathing directly seemed quite effective too. Dave

The one of Clare orally inflating the dSMB is how it's taught on the Fundamentals course ...... in the sea though a bigger dSMB is used and that's inflated using the drysuit inflation hose ..... a lot of gas is needed to inflate one of those !! Using an open ended one is probably fine but not how mosy of the people I know here are doing it. HTH Mal

| As Mal has already suggested, most of the UK DIR contingent use 'closed circuit' SMBs which have a non-locking inflator mechanism which can be used to inflate that bag either orally (ooer) or via a standard inflation hose. That's not to say that more conventional SMBs aren't DIR - it's just that the closed circuit style has generally been adopted as the preferred type... Closed Circuit SMBs are available from Halcyon and Divingniknaks ![]()
