Worst thing is having to wind up from that sort of depth - regardless of your reel it's hard to wind at the rate that a good deco profile would dicate in the 70 up to 50 metre range.

Clare

I totaly agree bagging up from the bottom is hard work and a pain in the arse. Under normal circumastances the place to get back to is the deco staion , however the point I was trying to make is that there are good reason to carry a reel with plenty of line on as you just might have to bag up from the bottom, and again the point is back up. Not that I need to say that to you.

Cheers

Richard

I thought you would understand that principle.
Bit patronising. How many 120m dives have you bagged up from?

Yes, having the boat being able to follow me is important. However, if we're all ascending at the same time, I'm going to be in much the same place as every other diver on the dive. If I bag up from 120m, it's going to take 2 mins. At least. 2 mins at 120mins is going to add at least 30 mins to my deco. Probably more. And deco gas might be tight. So I'd ascend to my first stop and put the bag up from there.

But hey, what do I know? I've never done a 120m dive.

I find my McMahon is fine from 70m. However, I hate the handle. I hate the way if you push the ratchet in too far it hits the reel, etc. It's a long way from perfect, but I 10m/min ascents really are fine with it. I just wish someone would do a better version.

Ever tried a Kent Tooling reel?

Remind me when I come on your trip & you can borrow mine to give it a try. I'm sure that you'll love it - but if not then it's no loss.

I have just ordered Salvo 400ft. The selling point for me was the weight, so it's lighter for travel where every pound counts at the airport and the price. Hopefully I have made the right choice.

I have not bagged up from 120mts as I have got it right, and I have done 120mt dives.

You miss the point, and the point is back up.

Blimey not sure I would take one on holiday, although I guess it depends where you are going.

If you are planning the GUE route then I think the spool would do you for a while, if cost was an issue - obviously not because you have bought one. I bought a Pathfinder last summer and haven't used it yet, because since doing fundies I am back doing shallower practice type dives and the spool if perfect for practice.

Well, it will be my primary reel, so I will take it anywhere with me including deep stuff and wrecks on the trips.

seeing as you're in the DIR forum, I assume you know we don't use reels for SMB deployment? Or are you not actually heading down the DIR route?

I haven't missed the point. I just think it's a poor backup plan.
