Graham,

How can you be anti, or for for that matter, something about you know very little?

Anyway, I'm sure you will get plenty of answers soon though.

Adrian

I don't know about a weekend in November, but there's a big DIR gig at Stoney the weekend of the dive show.

Do you mind if I ask why you're anti-DIR?

I am running a Discover DIR day at Gildenburgh on 3rd Nov.....but am likely to be there over the winter .... if you want to hook up then let me know and we'll fix a date up.

I would also be interested in what you find in DIR to be against. In essence it's a system of diving designed to generate safe diving practices through training divers to a high level of proficiency.....

Let me know when you are free in December and we'll try to hook up.
Mal

My experience of DIR is lots of WE ARE BEST then when I have talked to the divers with all the black kit they do not have a great deal of dives under there belts, however I am prepared to listen an possibly change my opinion. Unfortunatly I can not make Stoney as I am weather depent diving out of Eastbourne.

Graham.

Reading between the lines, I get the impression that it's not DIR that Bottle Maker is 'anti' but the personalities that he's encountered so far. DIR has a hell of a lot to offer but unfortunately it does tend to engender a sense of misplaced elitism in a sad few - it's these individuals that unfortunately give DIR a bad name...

As others have said, perhaps Bottlemaker should meet up with some of the more 'human' members of the DIR fraternity - the Chimps, for example - and let them give him an insight into what it's all about...

Indeed. The least elitist bunch you'd ever meet

As a one time DIR anti-Christ my self and lately full time CCR diver, you will appreciate I should be bias away from DIR rather than toward it. I also started diving in 1989 so I have got wet once or twice, especially today when my pee valve failed during my two hours of deco.

Yet despite all that I would say GUE (DIR) has a hell of a lot to offer and the DIR gigs at stony are fantastic. The line laying workshop is a must and the discussion on core beliefs is very interesting.

Yes, some people learn the system and argue its merits from a position of ignorance (lack of experience) but if you meet a DIR diver who has a lot of experience he will put forward very convincing arguments for the same points.

They don't do proper CCR but if they did id be signing up. As it is i just nick several of their concepts and integrate them into what I do when I dive with my regular buddies.

While not anti anything diving, and seeing no point to any of the politics involved in the sport, I can see why the whole ethos attracts a bad rep.

Now I know DIR is all about a holistic, team based approach to diving, George Irvine et al do appear to be a bit holier than thou. They don't like CCR, rebreathers, other than RB80 clones, computers etc etc.

This can be a bit elitist to the noobies amongst us.

I wonder if there are other sports with as much political nonsense as diving?

If there was a DIR day up in Scotland I may get involved, but there isnt.

I don't understand why that is regarded as elitest or politic. They have a rationale for holding those opinions so I think it's really good to look at why they hold those opinions and then people can make up their own minds ... to me that's a worthwhile debate.

As to George Irvine .... well..... I would strongly recommended reading the stuff by Jarrod Jablonski .... his style is so much more conducive
