Must submit a completed registration form, medical history, and liability release to GUE Headquarters.

Must be physically and mentally fit.
Must hold DAN Master level insurance or equivalent.
    Must be a nonsmoker.
Must obtain a physician's prior written authorization for the use of prescription drugs, except for birth control, or for a prior medical condition that may pose a risk while diving. A partial list of such conditions may be found on GUE's medical history form; if a student answers in the affirmative to any of these, they must obtain a physician's approval to dive and disclose this to their GUE instructor before the onset of training. Physician approval for a specific condition is valid for one year from the date it is given assuming there are no further changes to the student's medical conditions.
Must be CPR/First Aid trained (except for DIR Fundamentals).

Out of interest and in no way intending to start a ruckus could some one explain the thinking behind this please

    1.4.8 Steel Stage Bottles
No GUE member should use steel stage bottles in the open water. Any legal restrictions in conflict with this stipulation must be discussed with and approved by the Training Director.

    You are reading it wrong.

There was a thread on The Deco Stop about a guy with one arm doing GUE training. There was nothing unique to GUE that stood in his way. He faced the same problems he would have faced with any other training agency.

disabled people can be physically fit... take the para Olympics for example

I can't imagine any organisation would even dare discriminate in this day and age

It's to do with the buoyancy characteristics of Steel Vs Aluminium cylinder and the requirment of a balanced rig.

As far as I understand it an aluminium cylinder with move from slightly negative to slightly positive as the gas is used. This is preferable to steel that start negative and stays negative. Aluminium bottles are also easier to manage i the water but I have no idea about that. This practice isn't unique to GUE though.

Mark Chase makes a different arguement about steel 10l cylinder and trimix.

Thats what I was thinking the DDA is a powerful tool amongst many, it would be inconceivable that a diving course held in UK/Ireland in fact in the european union would not be available to someone on the grounds of a disability. Could smokers claim discrimination I think they could you know ( I am an ex smoker!)

    Look at this thread

Handicapped. - DIR Explorers where a one armed diver is going to take Fundies. However, I also know that one GUE instructor has some issues about a diver who could not do shutdowns because of an injury despite holding a trimix ticket from another agency.

If you can meet the standards then you can pass the class. This guy (on DIRx) managed to shutdown the opposite side post by reaching across with the good arm!!

At the recreational level you can be disabled and maintain the standards, at a technical or cave level you cannot do so, therefore you are unlikely to get a pass at Tech 1 or Cave 1.
