First off.

GUE is a training agency, DIR is a way of diving. DIR is as much a mindset and set of principles as anything. You don't have to have trained with GUE to be DIR (there are other agencies - NAUI and UTD) but if you are trained with GUE then you have been exposed to the DIR principles (doesn't mean you still adhere to them wholeheartedly).

Secondly, What do you mean who recognises courses? The HSE do. Do you mean dive centres or what?

Finally, GUE is the training agency which teaches DIR as it prime principle, creating thinking divers. The CEO for Halcyon is also the CEO for GUE, kit was originally made by Halcyon for DIR divers on the WKPP (and other projects) as there was nothing else available. DIR or GUE divers do not have to dive Halcyon kit (contratry to popular myths) but many prefer to do so as there is limited choice in the kit. The same goes for DUI, until recently DIR/GUE divers chose to DUI suits as there wasn't the choice of suits. Now there is Seaskin, Protect and Polar Bears (to name a few), you will find DIR divers using those suits.

Finally, finally, the reason behind the questions? Then we might be able to give a better answer if the above hasn't.

Regards

Which came first ?

Just wondering, Which cam first ? Halcyon or GUE ?
Call me a cynic.... But did The CEO for Halcyon "Create" a market for his own products by creating a "new diving ethos"?

This is not to offend, I know very little about GUE/DIR.

Regards.

Talking cheers

thanks for the quick response

I am asking as I have been hearing quite a bit about the DIR / GUE training system and the people I spoke to where not able to give me answers that satisfied my curiosity.

In relation to recognition of courses I was thinking that if someone turned up to their local dive centre and produced a GUE qualification Card where would you find the equivalency etc. Who would recognise the qualification......

You mention the HSE, is that a CMAS crossover ?

What about RSTC / EUF
Do BSAC recognise GUE

Thanks again for a good response

Regards

Rab

I can guess where this thread is going. So before it gets locked I'd just like to say that I've read the above sentence over and over and really can't come to terms with what it seems to imply.

I might, of course, be misreading it.

I don't think PADI-Paddy is trying to start a ruck, he is a local commercial operator trying to be better informed as to how he can better serve his customers.

I had a great dive with them today and would happily recommend DV Diving to anyone in the area.

Halycon was born out of the need for equipment to suit the diving style of the WKPP. GUE came along later.
