| I have been using the scout led conversion for some time and I can confirm that they are much brighter and give much more light either for wreck or cave. The focus is not as tight as a normal scout, but they are still pretty good. As for robustness for some strange reason I decided it would be a good idea to flood one with SW. I did not notice for more than two weeks, needless to say the batteries were pretty interesting :-). however after cleaning off the contacts the LED still works just fine.

This year I've had the chance to use both the Heser LED and the Scout LED extensively... in sea conditions.. sometimes as a backup replacing the primary. Say as a comperative field study (or so I'll put on my accounts). The Heser is indeed a very nice light and they obviously make a quality product, and in field comparisons we have run opinion with regard to "beam quality" of Heser/Scout LEDs has generally been divided equally. Some say one is better than the other or the other way around. Generally those on the other side of the torch gave feedback that the Scout LED was clearer but such responses are not really scientific. There are, however, a couple of differences between the Heser and Scout LEDs that we've been made aware of. The ballast of the Heser isn't sealed, and I am aware that when Halcyon originally evaluated the Heser LEDs while developing the LED Scout, the electronics of the Heser were destroyed when flooded (they have some funny destructive tests out there in Florida which beats ouyr combined attempts to flood anything here!). The ballast that Halcyon uses as the foundation for the Halcyon LED light "is" sealed and did survive the destructive testing. Additionally, the Halcyon ballast is "intelligent" enough to sense how many cells are used in the battery, allowing for the same LED assembly to work for both the Scout and the Mini-Scout. I understand the Heser can only be used with one battery configuration (?) Finally, when we discussed the differences with a senior WKPP diver at the dive show last year, I was told of the internal heat difference between the Heser (where the inner tube is somewhat used to disperse some of the heat) and the Scout in running mode -- something that I have not been able to personally ID due to the conditions I used them in. The good part is that the days of the expensive LED updates are no more. Halcyon is now able to sell both the Scout and Mini-Scout as LED lights (and not just as an upgrade kit as before). We are hoping that the mini-scout LEDs will be available for UK distribution just before or immediately after X-Mas. More info on the LED Scouts is up at http://www.halcyon.net/lights/scout.shtml PS: As for the Sartek, it looks pretty similar to a Tektite version I know of ;-) Best regards Izzy
