Question Backup timing device

Hi chaps,

I've always worn depth timer on the right and compass and watch on the left as per the Fundamentals of Better Diving but recently read that a backup timer should either be on the right near the depth timer or in the left pocket (as it is a backup device).

Thoughts anyone??

Cheers,

Fraser.

Wanna buy my VR3?

I use a chronograph on my left wrist as backup.

Not really qualified to comment on anything GUE orientated but why would you put any gauge in a pocket when if you were to suffer a failure would have to fart around and dig it out of the pocket when all you could do is move your eyes 2 inches to the right and it is there on your wrist? Doesnt make sense to me?

Why is it that GUE only have usually one guage on the arm anyway - can't really get in the way can they? I have a vyper and uwatec timer on the same arm and compass on the other and can't imagine that having one more timer is a PITA.

Fraser.
The Vytec has a stopwatch. Stops don't need to be that precise though and the uwatec or Vyper are just as good.

Dinger, we are talking about diving as a team, that way in a team of three we have three depth timers between us.

If you wear a gauge next to your compass the battery in it can interfere with the compass reading. Happened to me, I thought my navigation was rubbish until I realised.

Cool Stinger backup....

Hi,

Andy wears my backup timer but for good measure I also wear a Suunto Stinger (as it is just a large watch with gauge mode and stopwatch) on my left wrist.

Regards,

Mark.

PS. I use a Vytec in gauge mode as my primary timer.

Hi

You have to be in gauge mode (I think). The computer then shows minutes and seconds of elapsed time with a total dive time in the bottom corner. By pressing the RH button you reset the main display and it starts counting again. You are still able to view the total time in the bottom corner. When you download a profile you can see where the button was pressed. You can reset the main timer as often as you like. I tend to reset at the 21 mtr switch and then time the deco to the surface, Mark I think presses it for each stop, either way works well.

Andy
