There's a lot that can be gained by practice/technique. It's easier to locate the platic circle of the dump valve than the cord. If you place your fingers on/around the circle then move them together you should find that you've got a hold of the cord. It doesn't matter if you can't feel the cord - you can usually hear and feel the bubbles coming out of the valve when you use it.

As an aside - what wing do you have? I've found it a lot easier to use the rear dump with the 40lb wing that I use now than the 55lb I used previously (with twin-12s).

Alternatively, get thinner gloves :-)
I use thin sailing gloves which leave the end inch of my thumb and forefinger exposed. However, they don't provide that much insulation, which some people might find a disadvantage...

Dumping from an explorer

Gary a quick one, at the end of cold dives I had the same Problem and to the point it was a worry acending and doing stops will I manage to find it /feel it in time for my stops.. What it did is similiar to Rick I layed a small length of 5mm Dia nylon cord alongside dump string both same length and lashed the two together with twine ..nothing to catch on and slick..easy to find might not be fully DIR compliant but neither is missing your stops !!!...failing that there is nothing to stop you dumping from your inflator hose by altering your trim for a couple of seconds not rule #6 it all depends how cold your hands are !!!

Hi

Just find the dump, twirl your finger round and you find the cord. If you start making all sorts of changes then should you ever need to borrow a wing it will be unfamiliar to you. It is hard at first but after a few dives its not a problem.

Thats my opinion anyway.
