DGD GUE-F November/December

The Dorset Gas Diving Group (DGD) has organised through Underwater Explorers of Portland, Britain's first Regional DIR Facility, to host two GUE Fundamentals Courses to be run by Richard Walker in November and December 2005.

The first course in sea conditions will be run November 25-26-27. (The DGD has been informed this might already be full).

The second course is through December 09-10-11. (We have been informed there might be a couple of spaces on this one).

A third GUE-F course in sea conditions could be organised for January or February 2006 depending on numbers.

If you are interested in the two courses above please contact Richard. If you would like to attend a January or February training event for 2006 you can EM me and I can help sort the logistics out.

DIRF Portland 9-11th December

Thanks for posting this Izzy. There are spaces on the December course, 4 in total. Portland is well set up to do DIRF - classroom, boats and pool are all very close, and these a dive shop for you to buy all your DIR gear from if you need any "modifications"

So come on all you guys and girls who say you're thinking about it - get on and do it!

Have a look on www.gue.com for the kit prerequisites for a start.

Things like a spool , wetnotes etc are easily forgotten.

Nah, bugger that for a game of soldiers. Contact the instructor as to what he wants for the course. What is essential and what can slide for a course depend on him, not an American website.

What you *need* to have for the course

Rigid fins - preferably jet fins
One piece harness, backplate and wing
If you have twins they should be manifolded.
Regs which have a long hose on the primary regulator and a necklaced back up.

An open mind and a sense of humour.

The first list can be borrowed.

The last two are the most important

What do you have to do to prepare....

Nothing. Do yourself a favour and don't turn up in major new kit for the first time...a testing your new drysuit on your first dive of DIRF is a bit of a challenge - especially if you don;t know the weighting (I know at least two people who did this) and don't try to dive twins for the first time on the course. If you are used to a single stick with it - if you are already diving twins likewise.

What can you do....

You, and anyone else who is interested in learning more can always post up here or PM me or someone else and ask to come along for a dive or two. It's winter soon and we'll be stuck in quarries so won;t mind people coming along.... especially if they bring chocolate

Alun, I pointed the OP that way because Rich is out of the country for a while, and may not see the question.

The kit list will give a start as to what is needed.

As Clare points out Rich will lend some kit like wings etc.

Cheers

Excellent. Cheers for this. I am getting the twins et al this or next week and will be diving in them as much as possible before the course. If I can't get the hang of them, then I will do the course in a single. no need to make it harder for myself. Will no doubt be going to a Stoney for a "please show me some tips" dive soon..........message will be posted.

Thumbs up

Hi,

I'd take the advice here and not rush into buying anything or changing any configuration for this course only.

Just turn up with what you have, but do touch base with RW when he gets back from Florida on the very essentials. He has all the equipment at his disposal (or ours if needed) for any DIR/GUE course requirement down here and will be able to provide for anything else. If nothing, all of our own instructors and staff only use real DIR equipment anyway. (Okay, we also do dive teams and non-narcotic gases and use GUE guidelines and GUE gases ;-)

Before I did my own Fundamentals with GUE, doing rather long sessions underwater and on the surface with some of the best GUE guys I know in advance, I just turned up in what I already had and used, and wanted/expected feedback on them as well as possible improvement points.

We managed to exchange feedback that made me like this agency in its core.

That's the original value of the equipment side of the course. And also the morale behind it for me...

There'll be some of our own staff on this one.. I think I might well be sitting on some of the sessions too, so looking forward to touching base.

Izzy
