| Argon In all honesty do you guys really get any benefit from the use of Argon or is it a bit (Sticking neck over the parapet) of a Gimick? Does it save you much Back gas? How about the heat benefits? How about the cost and availablity of a fill?

Backgas, Argon, or 'Airgon' sometimes known as Scottish Argon. Using Backgas is not realistic. You will freeze with any decent amount of helium in the mix. Argon is physically warmer, at least it is noticable when injected into the suit. Long term I don't know, but even if its a 'feelgood' factor I'd rather 'feelgood'. Availability depends. Some people have a 12 ltr cylinder and get it filled once every few months, and then decant it as you need it. Cost about £10 I think. If you have a friendly welding place then even better 'Airgon' is used when you feel that you don't need argon, but it is far better than using backgas. Most of my UK diving is done with 'airgon' as it is warm enough anyway and dive times aren't that long. I just decant a bit out of my deco bottles (so actually its nitron) I'll be using Argon in France however, where the temperature is only 10 degrees and dive times are longer. I have a (14cf) 2.5 ltr bottle which will last all week Hope that helps Andy |

Helium is six times as conductive of heat as air and I'm told it feels like injecting water. Argon is 62% as conductive so I suppose we aren't going to notice the hit just the long term effects on your inner 'core' temperature. I use it but have to carry it myself as very few places stock it. In the summer the bottle just has air in it. |
