Thanks for the replies guys, it puts the thoughts into a bit more logical perspective. I knew there would be reasons, but I just couldn't see them.
I can understand how you all want the same kit, does make you a bit similar though, although of course thats the idea...
Cheers!

you have to remember how the dir concept grew from diving in a specific set of conditions in florida cave systems - where an unified team approach reduced logistical problems, amongst other things.

Based on the hours of diving being put in, there is some empirical data to support some (if not all) of the ideas/concepts

but even if you agree with all of the dir concepts and ideas, you may not arrive at the same conclusion depending upon your personal cirumstances, for instance, your attitutude to risk is different, you have a restricted budget etc etc

Try not to use the "s" word it's very naughty. By the way, have you done your fundamentals course Jimmy?

If you look around you'll find quite a few manufacturers of DIR compliant kit.

Any drysuit will do... obviously there are some that are more suitable
Wing... Simple horse shoe type, short hose, one dump (+hose) small... Halcyon, AGIR & Dirzone make suitable ones amongst many others
Regs... Scubapro, Apeks are favourites but any downstream reg with easily removed front plates that can be hand screwed on and off hoses... so almost any reg
So it's really only the positioning of kit that is the same... and different agencies all teach a similar kit setups anyway. So you don't have to look the same
