Clipping off primary reg

Hi all,

Read a post on DIR X about clipping off a primary reg, has anyone got a photo of how the boltsnap (I assume it's a boltsnap) attaches to the reg?

Cheers

Darren

Boltsnap

Hi Darren,
Tied with cave line to the hose in a position where you could still use the reg when still attached to the D ring if needed

Not sure if it's DIR stylee, but I used a largish 'O' ring to fasten the clip to the hose, just upstream of the hose-2nd stage join.

I have to admit to not understanding the rationale behind clipping off the primary reg? Unless the gas is unbreathable at the depth you are currently at, do you not want the long hosed reg instantly available for donation if required? Adding in the faff factor of a clip-off second stage seems contrary to instinct here. Why is it done?

I must admit then once I am on my stage I leave my rpimary reg loose around my neck. I only hangs down by about a foot, if that, and is right there, ready to donate if I need to. I only use the clip on it to tidy up out of the water.

I've never really felt the need, but I can see why some people do it. If you were scootering then a dangling reg is a problem, and it's not exactly where you need it if you need it.

Personally, whether it's DIR or not, I would use an O-ring to attatch it. If someone comes at you hard out of gas and sees it clipped off they can still pull hard and it will break free. With cave line that won't happen. Obivously that's not the DIR drill and is not what they're trained to do, but it can hit the fan, and things can sometimes go a different way to the way it was planned.

Digs.

Hi Lou (and subsequently Digger)

The only reason I ask is that when I got my 10s out for the second dive on the Nab on Friday, I found that when the cylinders were tested they had reset the isolator in such a position that I couldn't connect my CD slobknob, so I had to close the isolator and dive the set as indies. The left post was no problem as it was necklaced, but when I took my primary reg out I had to either drop it, or hold onto it - neither ideal!

Cheers

Darren

Ah-hah! I don't know if you noticed, but C dives indies and this is a perennial debate.

Her solution is to have an "open" necklace, and the reg she is not breathing off is stowed in that, whilst the one she is breathing off is free to be grabbed. Obviously if you grab the one on the regular hose you need to swap to the long hose, but at least nothing is clipped off hard.

What happens if someone hits you out of gas when you're breathing off the necklaced reg with the primary clipped off? Bad idea.

o ring

The O ring method is on the bottom of the page in the link

For me at the moment it just keeps everything tidy when not being used(kiting up etc).

Hi Digger

Not sure which is worse. If they take your necklaced reg, then you'd either have to unclip your primary, or sweep your arm back to try and recover it if it's dangling. At least if it's clipped off, you know exactly where it is. Or am I making a wally of myself and missing something obvious!
