New to DIR. Which torch should I get? Sofar the favourites are Halcyon Helios 10/18, or Salvo NiMH 21. But what about the Greenfoce impact 100 and Solus SU500? Ta

Hi What are they? Show us some pics or post some links to give us a clue mate Andy

Salvo v Greenforce You can find a number of discussions on these light systems. Both Salvo and Greenforce use the same robust bulb source, both are well made. IMO both are very good. Personally I use a GF Impact with F2 battery umbilical. It will light up entire wrecks and make your buddies feel inadequate. Been in use for a several years, used, abused but always very very bright.

If you want to be DIR then get the Salvo or the Halcyon. The other two are perfectly good lights but not what you would expect a DIR diver to use. I use the 21w salvo which IMHO is as bright as any one should need for wreck diving. Salvo is well supported in the UK via Divingnicnacs (SP) who have giving me and a lot of others amazing customer service. My diving friends have had a lot of problems with the Halcyon option. Flooded torches fragile bulbs seem common. Pete had his Halcyon 18W flood the first dive after it came back from repair (following a flood). Darren is fed up with his and has just ordered a Salvo head to go on his Halcyon canister. Bearing in mind the torch cost a smidge under £1000 thats not very impressive. The Solus SU500 is an LED torch which is massively strong and rugged. Its very bright but gives a softer more yellow light than the Halcyon / Salvo light sabers. The Solus 1000 is going to be a torch of epic performance I reckon, and its ruggedness would have me thinking seriously about buying one. BUT its not very DIR. I don't think they would like the Goodman's handle. The Green force might be good but seeing too many flooded Green force Arrows over the years has put me off them. They may have improved. However i don't think the battery packs would suit DIR type diving where the canister torch is an integral part of the diving system. HTH Mark Chase

Looks like I'll be remortgaging then, to get a Salvo. TVM

Forget remortgaging - look at my Salvo 21w HID on eBay. Auction ends tomorrow morning. Currently sits at £255. It's going to be a real bargain for someone.
