Backup masks

OK, this doesn´t just apply to the DIR guys and girls but thought this the best place to ask it

While I was hanging around on a stop yesterday I was practising a few skills midwater with my DMT, mask remove and replace being one of them, and had a thought.

If a DIR diver is carrying a spare mask, which would be used either for themselves or another team member, what happens if that person needs a prescription mask?

Would they carry a normal mask, and just put up with the bad vision?
Would they have a spare prescription mask, and mess up other peoples vision?
Carry one of each, although knowing which one to hand over could be problematic?
Or put them little half moons in the bottom of a normal mask?

Just a silly question from a non-dir diver.

You carry your own backup mask, if you need a backup you use it. If you've lost 2 masks you put up with whatever you get surely? You're not going to compromise not being able to see properly for the team, you'd be more danger to others with no vision, so just carry 2 prescription masks.

If you needed a weak lens then it might be ok not to bother, but if you know you need a fairly strong prescription surely you'd carry your own spare if the dive needed it? You're not likely to break 2 masks on the same dive, so shouldn't really need your buddy's spare.

That'd be like me losing my contacts - my eyesight is pretty bad without them, but underwater you would cope ok. I used to dive without any correction for ages and as long as you can see and read gauges then it isn't a big deal. The magnification underwater helps alot!

Leading on from Diggers 100m report I would have thought that it would be more important to have a mask that seals properly than one that you can see 100 % through especially on a rebreather ,ie if your at 80 -90 metres on a rebreather when you loose your primary mask having to constantly clear a badly fitting mask is going to be a very serious problem due to small tanks .
I personally have a problem with my prescription mask & now I dive ccr it is amazing how much air it takes from a 3l clearing a mask even at 40 metres .
Obviously not so much of a problem on oc .
