Not really explanations, more like opinions. Plenty of Chinese whispers and mis-interpretations too

Thanks mate.

Am I right in thinking then if that DIR is no exact science and that if, for example, I was to adopt x DIR principle or piece of kit that y number of people would have z opinions about it...?

I'd just find that confusing and take me back to when I first looked at regs and ended up making a choice based on what I researched and from other peoples opinions.

Not really, I was being a little tongue-in-cheek.

There is a pretty standard DIR kit configuration that's very well thought-out and has excellent reasoning behind it.

I do, however, find it amusing to see some of the discussions about the minutiae of detail where the logic behind the 'rule' has been lost in the mists of time and everyone has their own opinion about the origin.

Hi Mick

Harlequin,

You could do worse than follow the DIR Equipment Configuration Articles - DIR Explorers link which details the configurations and why they have been adopted.

Son, you're going to have to make up your mind about growing up and becoming aircrew. You can't do both.

The aircraft limits are only there in case there is another flight by that particular aircraft. If subsequent flights do not appear likely, there are no limits.

A good link with the principles is gue.com/Equipment/Config/index.html

As for who makes that sort of kit, the list is much longer. Halcyon, Agir Brokk, Salvo, DUI and DIRzone are some of the more common names though there are lots more around.

But it's important to remember that not everything that is made by the brands you mention is DIR-compliant. Take Halcyon, for example - it may be *the* DIR kit brand but there's more than a couple of products in its range that would raise GI3's eyebrow. Take the ACB (Active Control Ballast) weighting system, for example - it's a well known fact that this is not quite as DIR as Halcyon would like you to think.

The best way to find out what's DIR compliant is to talk to DIR divers...

And the new Megaladon wing

I think it's best to know WHY kit is or is not DIR compliant, then you can choose for yourself.

For example, everyone now/new uses Halcyon wings. DiveRite Classic wings (along with Seapec and Seatek IIRC) always were.
The only changes to the DR Classic between my two (one is about 10 y.o. and the other 2-3 y.o.) is that the newer one has a thicker outer.

Sorry, this is a bit of a hobby horse for me, but just because something that was DIR compliant does not have an "H" on it, does not mean that it's any less compliant than it was.

Another good example is OMS - they make some excellent bits of kit, some would fit the dir mould, whilst some wouldn't

personally i love the oms single cylinder wing - single bladder and no bungees of course
